Stitching Instructions for Flower Power Coasters Pattern:
Round 1: Center (Magic Circle and Base Layer)
- Create a magic circle. This is the adjustable loop that forms the center of your flower.
- Chain 3 (ch 3) – this counts as the first DC.
- Work 11 DC into the magic circle. To do this:
- Yarn over (YO), insert hook into the circle, YO again, pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook).
- YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, pull through the remaining 2 loops.
- Pull the starting tail to tighten the circle, closing the gap.
- Use an Invis Join or a slip stitch (sl st) to join into the top of the first DC.
- Total Stitches: 12 DC.
Round 2: Expanding the Circle (Increasing Stitches)
- Chain 2 (ch 2) – this does not count as a stitch.
- Work 2 DC in each stitch around (increase in every stitch):
- Insert hook into the next stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, pull through 2 loops (1st DC).
- Insert hook back into the same stitch and repeat the steps for the 2nd DC.
- Continue working 2 DC in each stitch until you complete the round.
- Join with an Invis Join or a slip stitch into the top of the first DC.
- Total Stitches: 24 DC.
Round 3: Adding Texture with Clusters
- Chain 2 (ch 2) – counts as the first DC.
- In the next stitch, work 1 DC, then in the following stitch, work 1 2DCCl:
- For 2DCCl:
- YO, insert hook into the stitch, YO, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
- YO, pull through 2 loops (leave 1 loop on hook).
- YO, insert hook into the same stitch, YO, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
- YO, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook).
- YO, pull through all 3 loops on the hook.
- For 2DCCl:
- Repeat from to around: Alternate 1 DC and 1 2DCCl.
- Join with an Invis Join or slip stitch into the top of the first DC.
- Total Stitches: 12 DC and 12 2DCCl (24 total).
Round 4: Shaping the Petals
- Chain 1 (ch 1) – this does not count as a stitch.
- In the first stitch, work the following to form one petal:
- 1 SC: Insert hook, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through both loops.
- 1 HDC: YO, insert hook, YO, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), YO, pull through all 3 loops.
- 1 DC: YO, insert hook, YO, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, pull through 2 loops.
- 1 HTR: YO, wrap the hook twice, insert into the stitch, YO, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2 loops at a time until 1 loop remains.
- 1 DC, 1 HDC, and 1 SC in the same stitch to complete the petal.
- Skip the next stitch.
- Repeat from to around to create 6 petals.
- Join with an Invis Join or slip stitch into the first SC.
- Total Petals: 6.
Optional Round 5: Larger Petals for a More Pronounced Flower
- Chain 1 (ch 1) – this does not count as a stitch.
- In the space between petals (skip all petal stitches), work the following to form a larger petal:
- 1 SC, 1 HDC, 2 DC, 1 HTR, 2 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC.
- Skip the next space.
- Repeat from to around to form 6 larger petals.
- Join with an Invis Join or slip stitch into the first SC.
- Total Petals: 6.
Finishing Touches
- Fasten off the yarn securely by pulling the tail through the final loop.
- Use a needle to weave in all ends neatly on the wrong side of the coaster.
- If necessary, block the coaster using a damp cloth and pins to ensure a perfect circular shape.
