Starfish Crochet Washcloth

Easy – Suitable for confident beginners who are comfortable with working in the round and using double crochet stitches.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Approximately 60 yards of 100% cotton yarn. The original sample uses Knit Picks Dishie in the color Clementine (25403). This yarn comes in 100g skeins (190 yards), so one skein will be plenty. You can substitute with any similar worsted-weight cotton yarn.
  • Hook: Size 5.0 mm [US H-8] crochet hook, or size needed to meet approximate dimensions.
  • Notions:
    • Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
    • Scissors
  • Gauge: 2 inches = 8 stitches (double crochet).
  • Finished Size: Approximately 9 inches across from tip to tip.

Abbreviations Used

  • CH – Chain
  • ST(S) – Stitch(es)
  • DC – Double Crochet
  • SC – Single Crochet
  • SL ST – Slip Stitch

Note: CH 3 always counts as a DC throughout the pattern.

Stitching Instructions for Making the Starfish Crochet Washcloth Pattern:

Start

  • CH 4.
  • Join with a SL ST to the first CH to form a ring.

Round 1:

Work 14 DC into the ring.
  • CH 3 (counts as DC).
  • Work 14 DC into the ring.
  • Join with a SL ST to the top of beginning CH 3.

Round 2:

  • CH 3 (counts as DC).
  • DC in the same ST.
  • Repeat the following 4 times: (DC, CH 2, DC) in next ST, then DC in each of the next 2 STS.
  • Then: (DC, CH 2, DC) in next ST, DC in next 2 STS.
  • Join with SL ST in the top of the CH 3.

Round 3:

  • SL ST in next ST.
  • CH 3 (counts as DC), DC in next ST.
  • Repeat the following 4 times: In the CH 2 space: (3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC). DC in next 2 STS, skip 2 STS, DC in next 2 STS.
  • Then: (3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC) in last CH 2 space, DC in next 2 STS, skip last 2 STS.
  • Join with SL ST in top of CH 3.

Round 4:

  • CH 3, DC in next 3 STS.
  • Repeat the following 4 times: (3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC) in CH 2 space, DC in next 4 STS, skip 2 STS, DC in next 4 STS.
  • Then: (3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC) in final CH 2 space, DC in next 4 STS, skip last 2 STS.
  • Join with SL ST in top of CH 3.

Round 5:

  • Repeat the following 4 times: (3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC) in CH 2 space, DC in next 6 STS, skip 2 STS, DC in next 6 STS.
  • Then: (3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC) in final CH 2 space, DC in next 6 STS, skip last 2 STS.
  • Join with SL ST in top of CH 3.

Round 6:

Round 7:

  • CH 1.
  • SC in next 10 STS.
  • In the CH 2 space: SC 2 times.

Create Hanging Loop:

  • CH 16, SL ST to the first CH made to form a loop, SC again in CH 2 space.
  • Repeat the following 4 times: SC in next 10 STS, skip 2 STS, SC in next 10 STS, SC 3 times in CH 2 space.
  • Then: SC in next 10 STS, skip last 2 STS.
  • Join with SL ST in first SC.

Finishing

  • Fasten off.
  • Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.
