Remington Diamond Cable Crochet Hat

Pattern Description:

This toque features a classic ribbed brim and a beautiful honeycomb/delicate diamond design, topped with a pom pom. 

Worked from the bottom up, it creates an intricate look, suitable for intermediate crocheters. The pattern includes instructions for Baby, Toddler, Child, and Adult sizes, making it versatile for the whole family.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn: Red Heart® Soft® in a medium weight. The example colors used were ‘Light Grey Heather’ and ‘White’.
  • Yarn Weight: Medium weight yarn (size 4 / ‘Worsted’ / 10 ply).
  • Hook: US H/8-5.00mm crochet hook.
  • Notions: Any yarn or faux fur pom pom. Specifically, Rainbow Designs Faux Fur Pom Poms were used and recommended.
  • Measurements:
    • Baby (Age 6-12 Months): 17” circumference, 6.5” high.
    • Toddler (Age 1-3 Years): 18” circumference, 7.5” high.
    • Child (3-10 Years): 19” circumference, 8” high.
    • Adult: 20” circumference, 9” high.

Stitches & Abbreviations Used:

  • ch – Chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.
  • dc – Double Crochet: Yarn over and insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
  • dc2tog – Double Crochet 2 Together: Yarn over and insert hook into first stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and insert hook into second stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook.
  • FP – Front Post: Work stitches around the front post of work.
    • FPdc – Front Post Double Crochet.
    • FPdc2tog – Front Post Double Crochet 2 Together.
  • sl st – Slip Stitch: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch and loop on hook.
  • sts – Stitches: Number of various stitches made in a row/round.
  • Skip 1 stitch, dc in next stitch, dc in skipped stitch/rib (represented as ‘X’ in chart).
  • Skip 1 stitch, FPdc around next stitch, FPdc around skipped stitch (represented as bold ‘X’ in chart).

Instructions for Making the Remington Diamond Cable Crochet Hat Pattern:

Brim Instructions

The brim of the hat is worked in rows and then seamed to form a circle, which prepares it for the diamond cable section to be worked in rounds.

  • Row 1 (Foundation Chain and Slip Stitches):
    • Chain the following number of ch for your desired size:
      • Baby (Age 6-12 Months): 8 ch
      • Toddler (Age 1-3 Years): 9 ch
      • Child (3-10 Years): 10 ch
      • Adult: 11 ch
    • Sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook, then sl st in the remaining chains.
    • Stitch Counts at the end of Row 1:
      • Baby: 7 sl st
      • Toddler: 8 sl st
      • Child: 9 sl st
      • Adult: 10 sl st
  • Row 2 (Back Loop Slip Stitches):
    • Ch 1, turn your work.
    • Sl st in the back loop of each stitch across the row.
    • Stitch Counts at the end of Row 2:
      • Baby: 7 sl st
      • Toddler: 8 sl st
      • Child: 9 sl st
      • Adult: 10 sl st
  • Rows 3 to Final Brim Row (Repeat Row 2):
    • Repeat Row 2 (Ch 1, turn, sl st in back loop of each stitch) until you have completed the following total number of rows for your size:
      • Baby: Row 90 (resulting in 45 ribs)
      • Toddler: Row 96 (resulting in 48 ribs)
      • Child: Row 102 (resulting in 51 ribs)
      • Adult: Row 108 (resulting in 54 ribs)

Joining the Brim

Once the brim rows are completed, you will seam the first and last rows together to form a circle.

  • Seaming: Sl st the first row to the last row to create a circular brim.
  • Orientation: Rotate the brim so you can work along one edge in a circle for the subsequent hat rounds.

Hat Body (Diamond Cable Section)

The main part of the hat, featuring the delicate diamond design, is worked in the round using a combination of regular and front post stitches. Note that the beginning chain does NOT count as a stitch in the stitch counts, and stitch counts in brackets [ ] at the end of each round are in order of size.

  • Round 1:
    • Ch 2.
    • Working into the top of each rib of the brim: dc in the first stitch, 2dc in the next stitch.
    • Repeat from * until 1 stitch remains: (skip next stitch and dc in following stitch, dc around skipped stitch, 2dc in next stitch).
    • Dc in the last stitch.
    • Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning chain.
    • Stitch Counts: [60 sts | 64 sts | 68 sts | 72 sts].
  • Round 2:
    • Ch 2.
    • Dc in the first stitch, FPdc around the same stitch.
    • Repeat from * until 3 stitches remain: (Skip next 2 stitches and FPdc around following stitch, Dc in same stitch, dc in next stitch, FPdc around previous stitch).
    • Skip next 2 stitches and FPdc around the following (last) stitch.
    • Dc in the same (last) stitch.
    • Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning chain.
    • Stitch Counts: [60 sts | 64 sts | 68 sts | 72 sts].
  • Round 3:
    • Ch 2.
    • Dc in the first stitch.
    • Repeat from * until 3 stitches remain: (skip next stitch and FPdc around following cable stitch, FPdc around skipped cable stitch, dc in next 2 stitches).
    • Skip next stitch and FPdc around following cable stitch.
    • FPdc around skipped cable stitch.
    • Dc in the last stitch.
    • Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning chain.

  • Round 4:
    • Ch 2.
    • Skip the first stitch and FPdc around the next stitch.
    • Dc in the same stitch.

  • Rounds 6 to Final Pattern Repeat Round (Repeat Rounds 2-5):
    • Repeat Rounds 2 to 5 until you have completed the following total number of rounds:
      • Baby: Round 14
      • Toddler: Round 16
      • Child: Round 18
      • Adult: Round 20
    • Stitch Counts at the end of these rounds will remain: [60 sts | 64 sts | 68 sts | 72 sts].
  • Final Decrease Round (Round 15/17/19/21):
    • For Baby and Child Sizes:
      • Ch 2, dc in first stitch.
      • Repeat from * until 3 sts remain: (FPdc2tog, dc2tog).
      • FPdc2tog, dc in last stitch.
      • Stitch Counts: [31 sts | 35 sts].
    • For Toddler and Adult Sizes:
      • Ch 2, FPdc around first stitch.
      • Repeat from * until 3 sts remain: (dc2tog, FPdc2tog).
      • Dc2tog, FPdc around last stitch.
      • Stitch Counts: [33 sts | 37 sts].

Seaming and Finishing

Once the final decrease round is completed, you will close the top of the hat and add your pom pom.

  • Fasten off your yarn.
  • Seaming the Top: Weave a strand of yarn through every 2nd stitch around the top of the hat and pull tightly to close the opening.
  • Attach Pom Pom: Affix your chosen yarn or faux fur pom pom to the top of the hat. Rainbow Designs Faux Fur Pom Poms are specifically recommended.
