Komorebi Pleated Skirt Pattern

Pattern Description:

This is an Intermediate crochet pleated skirt, inspired by the Japanese word ‘Komorebi’ (sunlight filtering through trees).

Perfect for summer, the main part is worked in rows from side to side. The skirt is crocheted almost entirely in one piece, requiring no sewing other than attaching the closure button. It is designed to fall just above the hip.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Durable Cotton No. 10, 100% cotton, 100g/420m/459yd.
  • Yarn A (Color): 087, Ecru (required quantity ranges from 5 to 8 balls depending on size: 5 (5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8) balls).

Instructions for Making the Komorebi Pleated Skirt Pattern:

Main Part of the Skirt

Use Yarn A (Ecru) and a 4mm/ US-G hook. The main part is crocheted in rows.

Set Up Rows

  • Set up row 1: Ch 143 (143, 143, 154, 154, 154, 154, 165, 165, 165), turn.
  • Set up row 2 (WS): 1t-ch, start crocheting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc 143 (143, 143, 154, 154, 154, 154, 165, 165, 165), turn (Total: same number of sts).

Base Rows (Pleat Foundation)

  • Row 1-8: 1t-ch, scbl 143 (143, 143, 154, 154, 154, 154, 165, 165, 165), turn (Total: same number of sts).

Pleat Row (Filtering Light Effect)

  • Row 9 (RS): 4t-ch (counts as 1st tr and 1ch). Skip next st.
    • Crochet [1trbl, 1ch and skip next st] x9.
    • Crochet [1dcbl, 1ch and skip next st] x10.
    • Crochet [1hdcbl, 1ch and skip next st] x10.
    • Finally, crochet 83 (83, 83, 94, 94, 94, 94, 105, 105, 105) scbl, turn (Total: same number of sts).
  • Row 10 (WS): 1t-ch, scbl 143 (143, 143, 154, 154, 154, 154, 165, 165, 165), turn (Total: same number of sts).

Repeat and Total Rows

  • Row 11 and further: Repeat Row 1-10 39 (41, 43, 44, 45, 47, 48, 50, 53, 55) times more, turn.
  • This results in a grand total of 400 (420, 440, 450, 460, 480, 490, 510, 540, 560) rows crocheted.

Closing the Skirt Main Part

  • Row 401 (421, 441, 451, 461, 481, 491, 511, 541, 561): Place set up row 1 against the last crocheted row. Work through both rows at once to close the main part of the skirt. Crochet 1t-ch, then work through both rows at once 143 (143, 143, 154, 154, 154, 154, 165, 165, 165) sc.
  • Continue immediately to crochet the waistband of the skirt.

Waistband of the Skirt

Continue with Yarn A and switch to a 3.5mm/ US-E hook. Turn your work a quarter turn so you can crochet over the top of the skirt.

Since each row in the main part counts as 1st, you will crochet 2 rows together in the next row to reduce the stitch count.

  • Row 1 (RS): 1t-ch, sc2tog; repeat from to 1st before end of row, 1sc, 10ch, turn.
    • Result: 200 (210, 220, 225, 230, 240, 245, 255, 270, 280) sc2tog, 1sc, 10ch.
  • Row 2 (WS): 1t-ch, sc 211 (221, 231, 236, 241, 251, 256, 266, 281, 291), turn (Total: same number of sc).
  • Row 3-6: 1t-ch, sc 211 (221, 231, 236, 241, 251, 256, 266, 281, 291), turn (Total: same number of sc).
  • Row 7 (RS, Buttonhole Row): 1t-ch, 3sc, 6ch and skip 6sts, sc 202 (212, 222, 227, 232, 242, 247, 257, 272, 282), turn (Total: same number of sts).
  • Row 8-12: 1t-ch, sc 211 (221, 231, 236, 241, 251, 256, 266, 281, 291), turn (Total: same number of sc).
  • Row 13 (RS): 1t-ch, sc 211 (221, 231, 236, 241, 251, 256, 266, 281, 291) (Total: same number of sc).

Finishing

Cut the yarn and weave in the ends. Attach the 30mm button (Restyle: 007.83317.30) to the flap created in Row 7. To position the button, count back 6 sts from the last st and attach the button to the RS of the work at this location.
