Geometric C2C Pillow Pattern

Pattern Description:

This is a fun, geometric, and colourful corner-to-corner (c2c) pillow pattern that offers a crochet colourwork adventure.

The design was inspired by Bargello designs, which appear stepped or ‘rippled’, with a nod to a geometric floral motif.

The cushion cover is constructed from two c2c panels; the back is plain (though it can be colourful), and the front uses colourwork.

Each panel is worked diagonally using blocks made of a chain 3 (ch3) and three treble/double crochets (3tr/dc).

Materials Needed & Measurements:

Measurements and Tension

  • The cushion cover pattern is designed to fit a cushion pad measuring 45X45cm (18X18in).
  • The required Tension (gauge) is 9-by-9 c2c blocks to measure 10X10cm (4X4in), using a 4.5mm hook, or the size needed to achieve the correct tension.

Yarn

The crochet colourwork cushion was made using Scheepjes Colour Crafter (100% premium acrylic, 100g/300m) yarn. A suitable alternative that matches well is Brava Sport by WeCrochet (100% premium acrylic, 273yds/100g).

B. Decreasing Rows (Rows 42–81)

  • Row 42: Ss in next 3 dc, ss in ch-3 sp on final block of last row, ch3, 3dc in same sp, ss in next ch-3 sp across; rep from 39 times more, turn. [40 c2c blocks]
  • Row 43: Ss in next 3 dc, ss in ch-3 sp on first block, ch3, 3dc in same sp, ss in ch-3 on next block across; rep from across to final block, ss in ch-3 sp on final block, turn. [39 c2c blocks]
  • Rows 44-81: Work as Row 43. You will have 1 c2c block at the end of Row 81.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Front Panel (Colourwork)

The Front panel follows the same construction as the Back, but requires consulting a separate color chart for all color changes.

Begin with Delft yarn, ch6.

  • Rows 1–5: Work as Rows 1–5 of the Back panel. [5 c2c blocks at end of Row 5]
  • Row 6: Ch6, dc in fourth ch from hook and next 2 ch, ss in ch-3 sp on next block from prev row, ch3, 3dc in same sp*; Rep from twice more, change to Eelde, rep from to ** once more, change to Assen, rep from to * once more, turn. [6 c2c blocks]
  • Row 7: Ch6, dc in fourth ch from hook and next 2 ch, change to Delft, ss in ch-3 sp on next block from prev row, ch3, 3dc in same sp*, change to Eelde, rep from to * once more, change to Delft, rep from to * 4 times, turn. [7 c2c blocks]
  • Rows 8-81: Follow the pattern for the back panel (increase/decrease rows) while using the downloaded Chart for all color changes.

To Make Up

The cushion cover is designed to fit a 45X45cm (18X18in) cushion pad.

  • Place the Back and Front panels together, with the RS facing out.
  • Join Delft yarn through the corner on both panels.
  • Round 1 (RS): Ch1 (does not count as st) sc in corner, (ch2, sk next block, sc in space between 2 c2c blocks) across to next corner; rep from 3 times more. Before joining the final side, insert the cushion pad.
  • Ss to beg sc.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

The assembly process, where you join the two panels and simultaneously insert the cushion pad, is like fitting a zipper into a jacket, you are closing the final seam while encapsulating the inner contents.
