This throw has soft stripes and raised rows. Cream, slate blue, and soft gray give it a calm look. Work one row in single crochet.
Work the next in double crochet. Repeat these rows to make a simple fabric. Back-loop stitches form thin ridges.
Work the throw flat. Then add a single crochet border. This is a good choice if you know basic stitches and how to change colors.
Materials
- Bulky yarn, Category #5: About 1,400–1,700 yards total.
- Color A — Cream: About 650–800 yards, including the border.
- Color B — Slate blue: About 450–550 yards.
- Color C — Soft gray: About 300–350 yards.
- Crochet hook: US L/11, 8 mm, or the size needed to meet gauge.
- Yarn needle.
- Scissors.
- Measuring tape.
- Four removable stitch markers.
Use yarns of the same weight and similar fiber content. Choose a washable yarn if the throw will need frequent cleaning.
Gauge
10 sts and 8 rows = 4 inches, measured over the alternating sc and dc pattern after washing and drying.
The eight rows include four sc rows and four dc rows.
Make a gauge swatch:
- Ch 23.
- Sc in the second ch from the hook and each ch across. 22 sc.
- Ch 2, turn. Dc in each st across. 22 dc.
- Ch 1, turn. Sc in BLO of each st across. 22 sc.
- Repeat Steps 3–4 until you have 16 rows in total.
- Wash and dry as directed on the yarn label.
- Measure a 4-inch section near the center.
If you have more than 10 sts in 4 inches, try a larger hook. If you have fewer than 10 sts, try a smaller hook. Check row gauge as well.
Finished Measurements
About 42 inches wide × 54 inches long, including the border.
The main blanket measures about 40 inches wide × 52 inches long before edging.
Your yarn, tension, and finishing method may change the final size.
Pattern Notes
- Use US crochet terms.
- Work in rows. Turn after each row.
- Ch 1 and ch 2 at the start of a row do not count as sts.
- Each blanket row has 100 sts.
- Work dc rows through both loops.
- Work sc rows in BLO, except for the foundation row.
- Each stripe has 8 rows.
- Change colors on the last pull-through of the final st.
- Cut the yarn after each stripe. Leave a tail of at least 6 inches.
- Work the border through both loops.
- Mark the first and last st of each row if needed.
Abbreviations
| Abbreviation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ch | Chain |
| sc | Single crochet |
| dc | Double crochet |
| sl st | Slip stitch |
| st / sts | Stitch / stitches |
| BLO | Back loop only |
| RS | Right side |
| WS | Wrong side |
| rep | Repeat |
BLO: Insert the hook under the back loop of the stitch only. The unused front loop forms a ridge across the fabric.
Pattern Instructions
Step 1: Work the Foundation
With Color A, ch 101 loosely.
Row 1: Sc in the second ch from the hook and each ch across. 100 sc.
Mark the first and last sc.
Step 2: Establish the Stitch Pattern
Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Dc in each st across, working through both loops. 100 dc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc in BLO of each st across. 100 sc.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Row 5: Rep Row 3.
Rows 6–8: Continue alternating the dc row and the BLO sc row.
Row 8 is a dc row. Change to Color B on the final pull-through of its last dc.
Step 3: Work the Stripes
Continue the same stitch pattern through Row 104:
- Odd-numbered rows: Ch 1, turn. Sc in BLO of each st across.
- Even-numbered rows: Ch 2, turn. Dc through both loops of each st across.
Every row has 100 sts.
Follow this color layout:
| Stripe | Rows | Color |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–8 | A — Cream |
| 2 | 9–16 | B — Slate blue |
| 3 | 17–24 | C — Soft gray |
| 4 | 25–32 | A — Cream |
| 5 | 33–40 | B — Slate blue |
| 6 | 41–48 | A — Cream |
| 7 | 49–56 | C — Soft gray |
| 8 | 57–64 | A — Cream |
| 9 | 65–72 | B — Slate blue |
| 10 | 73–80 | A — Cream |
| 11 | 81–88 | C — Soft gray |
| 12 | 89–96 | B — Slate blue |
| 13 | 97–104 | A — Cream |
After Row 104, fasten off.
Lay the blanket flat and check its size. At the stated gauge, the body should measure about 40 × 52 inches.
Step 4: Change Colors
At the end of an sc row:
- Work the last sc until two loops remain on the hook.
- Drop the old color.
- Yarn over with the new color.
- Pull through both loops.
At the end of a dc row:
- Work the last dc until two loops remain on the hook.
- Drop the old color.
- Yarn over with the new color.
- Pull through both loops.
Cut the old yarn and leave a 6-inch tail. Work the next turning chain with the new color.
Step 5: Add the Border
Choose one face as the RS. With the RS facing, join Color A at a corner.
Round 1
Ch 1. This does not count as a st.
Work 3 sc in the corner. Mark the middle sc.
Continue around the blanket:
- Across the top: Work 1 sc in each st.
- Along the sides: Begin with 1 sc in each sc row end and 2 sc in each dc row end.
- Across the foundation: Work 1 sc in the underside of each foundation ch that holds an sc.
- At each corner: Work 3 sc and mark the middle sc.
At the top and foundation corners, the 3-sc group replaces the single sc in that corner stitch. Do not work a corner twice.
Sl st to the first sc to join. Do not turn.
Lay the blanket flat. If the border pulls inward, add a few evenly spaced sc. If it waves, reduce the number of sc.
Round 2
Ch 1.
Sc in each st around. Work 3 sc in each marked corner st.
Move each marker to the middle sc of the new corner group.
Sl st to the first sc.
Round 3
Rep Round 2.
Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail.
Step 6: Finish the Throw
- Weave each tail through several sts on the WS.
- Change direction once to help secure each end.
- Wash the blanket as directed on the yarn label.
- Lay it flat and gently straighten the edges.
- Shape the corners without stretching the fabric.
- Let the blanket dry fully.
Adjust the Size
To change the width: Add or remove foundation chains. The row stitch count is one fewer than the chain count. At the stated gauge, 10 extra chains add about 4 inches of width.
To change the length: Add or remove rows in pairs to maintain the stitch pattern. Eight rows add about 4 inches of length.
A larger blanket will need more yarn.
