Stitching Instructions for Chicken Coasters Pattern:

Body of the Chicken Coaster:

  • Round 1: Start with a magic ring. Work 8 sc into the ring. Pull the tail tightly to close the ring securely. Join with a sl st to the first sc to form a circle. (8 sts)
  • Round 2: Ch 1. Work 2 sc into each stitch around (increase in every stitch). This doubles the stitch count. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (16 sts)
  • Round 3: Ch 1. (1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st) repeat around. This pattern alternates between single stitches and increases. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (24 sts)
  • Round 4: Ch 1. (1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st) repeat around. This forms the final size of the coaster’s circular base. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (32 sts)

Chicken Comb (Top of the Head):

  • Using red yarn, attach with a sl st to the stitch at the top-center edge of the circle.
    • Ch 3, work 1 dc into the same stitch, sl st into the next stitch. This forms the first bump.
    • Repeat the sequence (Ch 3, 1 dc in the same stitch, sl st in the next stitch) two more times to create three bumps in total for the comb. Fasten off the red yarn and weave in the ends.

Beak:

  • Attach yellow yarn to the stitch directly below the comb (front-center of the circle).
    • Ch 3, work 1 dc into the same stitch, sl st into the next stitch. This forms a small triangular beak shape. Fasten off the yellow yarn and weave in the ends.

Wattle:

  • Using red yarn, attach to the stitch directly beside the beak (on either side).
    • Ch 3, work 1 sc into the same stitch, sl st into the next stitch. This creates the small decorative wattle below the beak. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Tail Feathers:

  • Attach the main color yarn to the edge of the circle, on the opposite side from the beak (back-center).
    • Sl st to the first chosen stitch.
    • (Ch 4, work 1 tr into the same stitch, sl st into the next stitch) repeat 5-6 times across the back edge, spacing the feathers evenly. This creates a fan-like tail.
    • Fasten off and weave in all loose ends securely.

Finishing Touches:

  • Use the darning needle to weave in all loose ends neatly to prevent unraveling. Trim excess yarn.
  • Gently block the coaster to ensure it lays flat and retains its round shape.
