Round-by-Round Directions for Making the Sunflower Cup Coasters Pattern:

Round 1: Center of the Sunflower

  • Using chocolate brown yarn, create a magic ring (MR).
  • Inside the magic ring, work 12 sc (single crochet) stitches.
  • Join with a slst (slip stitch) to the first sc. (You should have 12 stitches in this round.)
  • Tighten the magic ring to close the center of the flower.

Round 2: Expand the Center

  • Ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch).
  • Work 2 sc in each stitch around.
  • Join with a slst to the first sc. (You should have 24 stitches in this round.)
  • Fasten off the chocolate brown yarn.

Round 3: Form the Flower Base

  • Join bright yellow yarn to any stitch of Round 2.
  • Ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch).
  • (Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then 2 sc in the next stitch). Repeat this sequence around the round.
  • Join with a slst to the first sc. (You should have 36 stitches in this round.)
  • Fasten off the bright yellow yarn.

Round 4: Create the Petals

  • Join bright yellow yarn (or you can use dark yellow yarn) to any stitch in Round 3.
  • Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch).
  • *(In the same stitch, work:
    • 1 hdc (half double crochet),
    • 1 dc (double crochet),
    • 1 tr (treble crochet),
    • ch 2 picot (chain 2, then slst into the first chain),
    • 1 tr,
    • 1 dc,
    • 1 hdc)*. This will form one petal.
  • After completing the petal, slst into the next stitch.
  • Repeat the petal creation pattern around the coaster, joining each petal to the next with a slst.
  • Join with a slst to the base of the first petal to complete the round.
  • Fasten off the yarn.

Round 5: Optional Second Layer of Petals

  • Join dark yellow yarn in the back loops of the stitches from Round 3.
  • Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch).
  • *(In the next back loop, work:
    • 1 hdc,
    • 1 dc,
    • 1 tr,
    • ch 2 picot,
    • 1 tr,
    • 1 dc,
    • 1 hdc)*. This forms a second layer of petals.
  • After each petal, slst into the next back loop.
  • Repeat the pattern for all the petals, slst into the next back loop after each one.
  • Join with a slst to the base of the first petal.
  • Fasten off the dark yellow yarn.

Finishing:

  • Use a darning needle to weave in any loose ends from where you fastened off the yarns.
  • Optionally, block the coaster to ensure the petals lay flat and the coaster retains its shape.

Final Notes:

  • Magic ring is used for a tightly closed center. If you prefer, you can substitute this with a ch 4, slst into the first chain to form a ring.
  • For the ch2 picot, make sure the chain loops tightly to maintain its shape and prevent it from becoming too loose.
  • Feel free to change the petal colors or add additional layers for a fuller sunflower effect!
