Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st = stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sts = stitches

Pattern Notes:

  • Always start a row in the first stitch attached to the chain
  • Chain 1 does not count as a stitch
  • All rows have the same number of stitches (56)
  • Front and back panels are identical
  • Number of starting chains determines width (in multiples of 2 + 1 for odd numbers)
  • Number of rows determines height; adjust as needed

Simple Crochet Pillow Instructions

Foundation/Chain Row

  • Action: Chain 57.

Row 1

Row 1
  • Action:
    • In the second chain from the hook, make a single crochet (sc).
    • In the next chain, make a double crochet (dc).
    • Continue alternating: sc in the next chain, dc in the next chain.
    • Repeat from to across the entire row (56 stitches).
    • Finish: Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2

Row 2
  • Action:
    • Sc in the first stitch (top of the last dc from Row 1).
    • Dc in the next stitch (top of the sc from Row 1).
    • Continue alternating: sc in the next stitch, dc in the next stitch.
    • Repeat from to across the entire row (56 stitches).
    • Finish: Chain 1 and turn.

Row 3 and Onward

Row 3
  • Action:
    • Repeat Row 2 until the pillow height measures 17” (approximately 49 rows).
  • Note: Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

Making the Second Panel

  • Action:
    • Make a note of the number of rows completed for the first panel.
    • Repeat instructions to create a second pillow panel.

Pillow Assembly: Positioning the Panels

  • Action:
    • Place one panel directly on top of the other (either side facing up).
    • Align the chain rows at the bottom and ensure the stitches line up perfectly.

Attaching Yarn

  • Action:
    • Attach a new strand of yarn to the bottom right corner stitch using a slip stitch (sl st).
    • Insert hook from the top through both panels, pull yarn through, and sl st.

Starting the Single Crochet Seam

    • If using pillow stuffing, sc about halfway across the bottom, fill with stuffing, and sc the rest of the way.

Finishing Up

  • Action:
    • When back at the first corner (where yarn was attached with a sl st), sc into the corner stitch.
    • Sl st into the first sc made to join.
    • Fasten off and weave in loose ends.
