Bernat Crochet Basket with Handles

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Suggested Yarn: Bernat Blanket or similar bulky yarn (#6)
  • Yarn Measurements: Approx. 400-600 yards (365-550 meters)
  • Gauge: 7 hdc and 5 rows = 4″ [10 cm]
  • Hook Size: 6.0 mm (J-10)
  • Finished Size: 9½” high x 12″ diameter
  • Other Tools: Slip stitch, stitch marker (optional), scissors, yarn needle

Stitching Instructions for Making the Bernat Crochet Basket with Handles Pattern:

Starting the Basket

  • Ch 4. Join with a sl st to the first ch to form a ring.

1st Round:

  • Ch 2. 10 hdc in the ring.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
  • (You will have 10 hdc in this round.)

2nd Round:

  • Ch 2. 2 hdc in each hdc around.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
  • (You will have 20 hdc in this round.)

3rd Round:

  • Ch 2. 1 hdc in the next hdc, 2 hdc in the next hdc.
  • Repeat from * around.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
  • (You will have 30 hdc in this round.)

4th Round:

  • Ch 2. 1 hdc in each of the next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in the next hdc.
  • Repeat from * around.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
  • (You will have 40 hdc in this round.)

5th Round:

  • Ch 2. 1 hdc in each of the next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in the next hdc.
  • Repeat from * around.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
  • (You will have 50 hdc in this round.)

6th Round:

  • Ch 2. 1 hdc in each of the next 4 hdc, 2 hdc in the next hdc.
  • Repeat from * around.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
  • (You will have 60 hdc in this round.)

7th Round:

  • Ch 2. 1 hdc in each of the next 5 hdc, 2 hdc in the next hdc.
  • Repeat from * around.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
  • (You will have 70 hdc in this round.)

8th Round:

  • Ch 2. 1 hdc in each of the next 6 hdc, 2 hdc in the next hdc.
  • Repeat from * around.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
  • (You will have 80 hdc in this round.)

9th Round:

  • Ch 2. Work 1 hdc into the horizontal bar created below each st in the previous row on the WS (wrong side) of the work.
  • Repeat from * around.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.

Rounds 10 to 13:

  • Ch 2. 1 hdc in each hdc around.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.

14th Round:

  • Repeat as 9th Round (working into the horizontal bars of the previous row).

Rounds 15 to 18:

  • Repeat Rounds 10 to 13 (1 hdc in each hdc around).

19th Round:

  • Repeat as 9th Round (working into the horizontal bars).

20th Round:

  • Ch 2. 1 hdc in each of the next 15 sts.
  • Ch 12 for the handle.
  • Skip the next 10 hdc.
  • 1 hdc in each of the next 30 hdc.
  • Ch 12 for the second handle.
  • Skip the next 10 hdc.
  • 1 hdc in each of the remaining sts around.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.

21st Round:

  • Ch 1. 1 sc in each of the next 15 sts.
  • 14 sc in the next ch-12 sp (handle space).
  • 1 sc in each of the next 30 sts.
  • 14 sc in the next ch-12 sp.
  • 1 sc in each st around.
  • Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Final Round:

  • Working in back loops only,
  • Sl st in each st around.
  • Join with a sl st to the first sl st.
  • Fasten off and weave in the ends.
