Round-by-Round Directions for Making Black Cat Slouch Hat Pattern:
Foundation Row (Work in fsc):
- Ch 12.
- Work 12 foundation single crochets (fsc) into the chain (or use chain + sc to create a starting foundation).
Tip: The foundation row should measure approximately 11″ (28 cm) when stretched to fit the head comfortably.
Round 1:
- Join the last fsc to the first fsc using a sl st, being careful not to twist the foundation row.
- Ch 1.
- Work 12 sc evenly into the base of the fsc row (each stitch placed into the top of the fsc).
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Round 2:
- Ch 1.
- Work 1 sc in each st around.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Round 3:
- Ch 1.
- Work 1 sc in each of the first 6 sts, then 2 sc in the next st.
- Repeat this pattern of “6 sc, 2 sc in the next” until you reach the end of the round.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Round 4:
- Ch 1.
- Work 1 sc in each of the first 7 sts, then 2 sc in the next st.
- Repeat the pattern of “7 sc, 2 sc in the next” until you reach the end of the round.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Round 5:
- Ch 1.
- Work 1 sc in each of the first 8 sts, then 2 sc in the next st.
- Repeat the pattern of “8 sc, 2 sc in the next” until you reach the end of the round.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Rounds 6-11 (or until desired hat height):
- Ch 1.
- Work 1 sc in each stitch around, joining with a sl st to the first sc at the end of each round.
- Repeat this for as many rounds as necessary until you reach the desired height (final length will be around 19″).
Shaping the Slouch:
- Once you reach the desired height, switch to half double crochet (hdc) to create a ribbed effect and finish the slouchy look.
Note: To switch to hdc:
- Ch 2 at the start of each round.
- Work hdc into each stitch around and join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
- Continue for 2-3 rounds to create a comfortable, relaxed fit.
Finishing the Hat:
- Fasten off the yarn and leave a long tail for weaving in.
- Use the yarn needle to weave in any loose ends around the brim.
Making the Cat Ears:
- For the cat ears, use the same yarn and a smaller hook (optional).
- Work two small triangles by chaining 5, then hdc in each st for about 4 rows.
- Attach to the top of the hat with a yarn needle for a playful, cute look.
Congratulations! You’ve made your Black Cat Slouch Hat!
