Chevron Band Pillowcase

Pattern Description:

This pattern, the Chevron Band Pillowcase, creates a finished pillowcase measuring 30″ × 20″, which fits a standard-size bed pillow.

The project uses four prints from the Lavinia, Polygon, and Kiss Dot collections by Michael Miller Fabrics.

The main design element is a pieced chevron band, made by joining alternating Segment A and Segment B units.

Once assembled, the chevron band is attached to the main pillowcase body to complete the project.

Materials Needed & Measurements

You’ll need the following materials:

  • 1/3 yard print No. 1 (band)
  • 1/3 yard print No. 2 (band)
  • 1/4 yard print No. 3 (band)
  • 7/8 yard print No. 4 (pillowcase body)

Note on Fabric Width and Seam Allowances

  • Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42″ of usable fabric width.
  • Measurements include:
    • 1/4″ seam allowances for piecing blocks
    • 1/2″ seam allowances for pillowcase construction
  • Finished Pillowcase Size: 30″ × 20″ Perfect for a standard bed pillow!

Seam Allowances Used

  • 1/4″ seam allowance: for piecing Segment A and Segment B units, and assembling the band
  • 1/2″ seam allowance: for constructing the main pillowcase body

Cutting the Fabrics

Cut the following pieces:

  • From print No. 1 (band): Cut 40 squares, each 2½” × 2½”
  • From print No. 2 (band): Cut 20 rectangles, each 2½” × 5½”
  • From print No. 3 (band): Cut 1 strip, 5½” × 40½”
  • From print No. 4 (pillowcase body): Cut 1 rectangle, 25¾” × 41″

Assembling Segment A Units

Use a 1/4″ seam allowance.

  • Using a pencil, draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of each 2½” square (print No. 1).
  • Place one marked 2½” square on one end of a 2½” × 5½” rectangle (print No. 2). Make sure the diagonal line direction matches Diagram 1.
  • Sew directly on the marked line. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4″, then press the triangle open.
  • Align another marked 2½” square on the opposite end of the same rectangle, referencing Diagram 2.
  • Sew, trim, and press as before to complete Segment A.
  • The finished Segment A should measure 5½” × 2½”, including seam allowances. Repeat to make 10 Segment A units.

Assembling Segment B Units

Use a 1/4″ seam allowance.

  • Create Segment B following the same steps used for Segment A.
  • Refer to Diagrams 3 and 4 to ensure the correct direction of the diagonal lines for the alternating chevron shape.

Each Segment B should also measure 5½” × 2½”, including seam allowances. Repeat to make 10 Segment B units.

Constructing the Chevron Band

Use a 1/4″ seam allowance.

  • Join the 10 Segment A and 10 Segment B units together in one long row, alternating A and B units (see Band Assembly Diagram).
  • Press seams in one direction. The completed band should measure 40½” × 5½”, including seam allowances.
  • Sew the 5½” × 40½” strip (print No. 3) to the assembled row along the long edges.
  • Join the short edges of this unit to form a loop.
  • Fold the loop in half with wrong sides together and press to form the finished pillowcase band.

Assembling and Finishing the Pillowcase

  • Fold the 25¾” × 41″ rectangle (print No. 4) in half to make a 25¾” × 20½” rectangle.
  • Using a 1/2″ seam allowance, sew both long edges and one short edge to form the pillowcase body.
  • Turn the pillowcase right side out and press flat.
  • Slide the finished chevron band over the open edge of the pillowcase body, with the pieced side facing the body (see Diagram 5).
  • Match raw edges and pin securely.
  • Sew through all layers using a 1/4″ seam allowance to attach the band to the body.
  • Press the band open, with the seam allowance pressed toward the pillowcase body.
  • Topstitch 1/8″ from the band seam on the pillowcase body to secure it (see Diagram 6).
