Stitching Instructions for Making the Summer Scallop Crochet Dress Pattern:
Foundation Chain:
- Ch a number of stitches based on your bust measurement (refer to your size):
- XS: ch 78
- S: ch 84
- M: ch 94
- L: ch 102
- XL: ch 111
- XXL: ch 120
- 3XL: ch 135
- This is your foundation chain to start the dress body.
Row 1:
- Turn your work.
- Ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch), and then sc in each ch across the row.
- Sc: Insert your hook into the next ch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over again, and pull through both loops on the hook.
- Turn your work at the end of the row.
Row 2:
- Ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch).
- Work sc in each st across the row.
- This is a continuation of the simple sc pattern from Row 1.
- Turn your work.
Repeating Rows 1 and 2:
- Continue repeating Row 2 until you reach the desired length for the bodice (use the bust length as a guide).
- Keep working in sc until you have completed enough rows to form the top section of the dress.
Row 3 (Start of Scallops):
- Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), then work sc in the first st.
- Ch 3, skip 2 st, then work 5 dc into the next st.
- Ch 3: Yarn over and pull through the loop on the hook three times.
- Dc: Yarn over, insert the hook into the next st, yarn over again, pull through, yarn over, pull through two loops, and yarn over again, pulling through the remaining two loops.
- Ch 2, then skip 2 st, and sl st into the next st.
- Sl st: Insert the hook into the next st, yarn over, and pull the yarn through both the stitch and the loop on your hook.
- Repeat the pattern: ch 3, skip 2 st, 5 dc, ch 2, sl st into the next st until you reach the end of the row.
- Turn your work.
Row 4 (Continue Scallops):
- Ch 1, sc in the first st.
- Ch 3, then skip the ch 2 space from the previous row.
- 5 dc into the next ch 2 space from the previous row.
- Ch 2, then sl st into the next sl st from the previous row.
- Repeat across the row to continue forming the scallops. The scallops should align directly above those in the previous row.
- Turn your work.
Rows 5 and onward (Continue Scallops):
- Continue to repeat Row 4 for as many rows as needed to create the body of the dress.
- Be sure to align the scallops from each row by working them into the ch 2 spaces of the previous row.
- Once you reach the desired length for the bodice, you can start shaping the skirt of the dress.
Shaping the Dress:
- Decreasing for Waist Shaping:
- To shape the waist, you can use sc2tog (single crochet two together): Insert the hook into the next two st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over again, and pull through both loops.
- Repeat this at the sides or where shaping is needed to create a more fitted waist.
- Increasing for Skirt Flare:
- To create a flared skirt, use inc (increase): Work 2 sc (or 2 dc for a lacy effect) in the same st.
- You can add increases at regular intervals around the skirt portion to create a flared effect.
Skirt Portion:
- Once the bodice is complete, sl st to join the last row and continue working in the round for the skirt.
- Ch 1, and work sc or continue the scallop pattern in the round for the skirt.
- Add inc where necessary to allow the skirt to flare out.
- Continue in the round until the skirt reaches your desired length.
Finishing the Dress:
- Shoulder Straps:
- Ch for the desired length of the strap.
- For example, ch 20 for each strap (adjust based on your preference).
- Sc across the chain for the strap length.
- Attach the straps to the dress body using sl st or sew in place with a darning needle.
- Ch for the desired length of the strap.
- Belt:
- Ch 10 (or adjust based on your waist size), then work sc across for the desired width of the belt.
- Attach the belt to the waistline using sl st or sew it in place.
Final Touches:
- Weave in all loose ends with a darning needle.
- Block your dress to shape it, particularly around the scallops and hem.
- Optionally, add a decorative border along the hem using sc, dc, or even another round of scallops for extra detail.
