Round-by-Round Tutorial for the Crochet Coffee Coasters Pattern:

Round 1 (Start with main mug color):

  • Step 1: Begin by making a magic ring or Ch 4 and join with a Sl St to form a ring.
  • Step 2:Ch 2 (this does not count as a stitch). Now, work 12 DC (Double Crochet) into the ring.
    • Note: You can work over the tail of the magic ring for a neater finish, or you can pull the tail tight later.
  • Step 3: Once you have completed the 12 DC, join with a Sl St to the first DC to close the round.
    • Total stitches for this round: 12 DC.

Round 2:

  • Step 1:Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). This will begin the second round. Work 2 DC in each stitch around.
    • Note: For each of the 12 stitches from Round 1, you will place 2 DC in each, effectively doubling the number of stitches.
  • Step 2: Once you’ve worked 2 DC in each stitch, join the round with a Sl St to the top of the first DC you made.
    • Total stitches for this round: 24 DC (12 x 2).

Round 3:

  • Step 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). This will start the third round.
  • Step 2: Work 1 DC in the next stitch, then 2 DC in the following stitch. Repeat this pattern around the entire round.
    • Note: You are alternating between 1 DC in one stitch and 2 DC in the next.
    • For example: 1 DC, 2 DC, 1 DC, 2 DC—repeat until you’ve made your way around the entire round.
  • Step 3: Once you’ve finished the round, join with a Sl St to the top of the first DC from the beginning of the round.
    • Total stitches for this round: 36 DC (12 x 1 DC + 12 x 2 DC).

Round 4 (Optional Decorative Edge with Coffee Color):

  • Step 1: If you’re switching colors, now is the time to change to brown yarn for the coffee color.

To switch colors, simply drop the main color and pull through the brown yarn in the final pull-through of the last stitch of Round 3.

  • Step 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch). This starts the decorative edge.
  • Step 3: In the first stitch of this round, work 1 SC (Single Crochet). In the next stitch, work 1 HDC (Half Double Crochet).

In the following stitch, work 1 DC (Double Crochet), and then skip the next stitch entirely.

  • Repeat the pattern: 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 DC, skip 1 stitch around the entire coaster.
  • Note: The skipped stitch creates a little gap between the clusters of stitches.
  • Step 4: When you’ve completed the round, join with a Sl St to the first SC made at the start of the round.
  • Step 5: Fasten off the yarn and use a tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends.

Finishing Touches:

  • Use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose yarn tails neatly, ensuring they are secured so that they do not unravel.
  • If desired, you can block the coaster by gently stretching it to shape and letting it dry flat. This step is optional but can help to ensure the coaster maintains its round shape.

Final Notes:

  • The coaster’s diameter should measure approximately 4 inches, but this may vary slightly depending on your yarn choice and tension.
  • You can personalize the coaster by using different colors for the mug and coffee sections, or by adding more rounds or embellishments such as a scalloped edge or decorative stitches.

Happy crocheting, and enjoy your new cozy coffee coasters!
