Crochet Dog Sweater Pattern(Customisable) Instructions:

Start with the Ribbing (Bottom of Sweater):

  • Foundation Row: Ch 6 (8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17), depending on size.
  • Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across. Turn. [Stitch count will vary depending on size.]
  • Row 2: Ch 2, hdcblo in each hdc across; turn.
  • Repeat Row 2 until the ribbing is long enough to wrap around your dog’s chest. Adjust the length according to your dog’s size.

Back Section:

After completing the ribbing, work the back portion of the sweater, starting from one edge of the ribbing.

  • Row 1: Sc into each stitch along the edge of the ribbing (26, 36, 40, 46, 51, 55, 55, 60, 72), depending on the size. Join Color B for the body of the sweater.
  • Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc into each st across (until end of row). Turn.
  • Row 3: Ch 3, dc into each st across. Repeat until the body is long enough to cover your dog’s back.

Decreasing for Neck: Once you reach the length that fits your dog’s back, you’ll begin decreasing to create a neck opening.

  • Decrease Row 1: Ch 3, sk 1 st, dc2tog, dc to last 3 sts, dc2tog, turn.
  • Repeat the decrease pattern until you have the desired number of stitches for the neck opening (depending on your dog’s neck size). For smaller dogs, you may only need a few rows.

Belly Section:

  • The belly section will mirror the back section. Start with Color B.
    • Foundation Row: Ch 20 (27, 30, 34, 37, 40, 40, 43, 52), based on size.
    • Row 1: Sc into each ch, turn.
    • Row 2: Ch 3, dc into each st across. Turn.
    • Rows 3–12: Continue repeating Row 2, or adjust the length depending on the belly measurement.
  • Decreasing for Belly:
    • As you approach the desired belly length, decrease similarly to the back section to shape the belly and neck area.
  • Collar:
  • For the collar, you’ll use Color A or Color B, depending on your preference.
    • Foundation Row: Ch 16 (21, 23, 26, 28, 31, 31, 33, 39), based on size.
    • Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across. Turn.
    • Row 2: Ch 2, hdcblo in each hdc; turn.
    • Repeat Row 2 for about 4–5 rows (or longer for a higher collar) until the collar is the desired height.
    • Attach the collar to the top edge of the sweater’s back portion.

Assembly:

  • Sewing the Sweater: Align the back and belly pieces. Using a tapestry needle, sew along the sides. Leave the neck and chest area open for easy wear. If you want side fasteners:
    • Add buttonholes to one side and buttons on the other side.
  • Attach the collar around the neck opening for a snug fit.
  • Weave in all loose ends.

Fastening Options (Optional):

If you want a sweater that can be easily put on and taken off, add buttons:

  • Buttonholes: On the front of the sweater, add buttonholes by skipping a few stitches where needed (depending on your dog’s neck size).
  • Buttons: Sew buttons onto the opposite side of the buttonholes.

Final Adjustments:

Try the sweater on your dog and adjust the fit. If the neck is too tight or too loose, you can easily add or remove rows in the collar. Similarly, the chest and belly sections can be modified by adjusting the number of rows.
