Stitching Instructions for Making Crochet Poncho with Sleeves Pattern:

Foundation Chain:

  • Start by making a foundation ch for the width of the poncho:
    • Small/Medium: Ch 85 (approx. 26–28 inches wide)
    • Large/XL: Ch 95 (approx. 30–32 inches wide)
  • Join the chain with a sl st to form a ring. Be careful not to twist the chain as you join.

Creating the Body of the Poncho:

  • Round 1: Ch 2 (this counts as the first dc). Work 1 dc in each ch across the foundation ring. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 2.
  • Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as the first dc). Work 1 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 2.
  • Rounds 3–20 (or to the desired length): Continue repeating Round 2 (Ch 2, 1 dc in each st around, join with sl st). Continue until the body reaches the desired length (Small/Medium: about 26–28 inches, Large/XL: 28–30 inches).

Neck Opening:

  • Shaping the Neck: Once you’ve reached your desired length, it’s time to create the neck opening. This is done by skipping stitches at the front.
    • First, determine how wide you want the neck opening (16–20 inches).
    • Divide this width by 2 and count how many dc stitches this corresponds to, then skip that many stitches.
  • Example for Small/Medium size:
    • Ch 16 to create the neck opening, then skip 16 sts at the front.
    • Continue dc in the remaining stitches around.
  • If needed, adjust the width of the neck opening based on your preference. After skipping the stitches, continue working in the round for the rest of the body as per the instructions above.

Sleeves:

  • Right Sleeve:
    • Mark the spot for the first sleeve, approximately 1/4 of the way from the front center.
    • Attach yarn with a sl st in the marked stitch.
    • Ch 2 (counts as the first dc) and work in the round for the sleeve:
      • Round 1: 1 dc in each st around.
      • Repeat for 18–20 inches (Small/Medium) or 20–22 inches (Large/XL), depending on the size of the sleeve you want.
    • Once the sleeve is the desired length, join with a sl st to the first dc. Fasten off.
  • Left Sleeve: Repeat the same process on the opposite side of the poncho for the second sleeve.

Finishing the Poncho:

  • Weaving in Ends: Use a tapestry needle to weave in all loose yarn ends, securing them neatly within the stitches.
  • Optional Edging: For a clean and polished look, you can add a border to the poncho:
    • Ch 1 and work sc stitches evenly around the neck, sleeve edges, and bottom of the poncho. Join with a sl st at the end of the round and fasten off.
    • Alternatively, you can use dc for a more decorative edging.
  • Block the Poncho: Gently block your poncho to the desired shape and size, ensuring the fabric lays flat and the neck opening is even.

Optional Customizations:

  • Length Adjustments: You can adjust the length of the poncho and sleeves by adding or removing rounds in the body or sleeve sections.
  • Different Stitches: You can customize the stitch pattern in the body or sleeves by adding sc, hdc, or dc clusters for texture.
