Stitching Instructions for Making Poncho for Vero Pattern:
Step 1: Foundation Chain
Begin by making a sl knot on your hook and ch 150. This will be the width of your poncho (adjust chain count if you need a wider or narrower poncho).
Step 2: First Row – Base Foundation
- In the 2nd ch from the hook, work dc.
- Work dc in each ch across to the end of the row.
- Turn your work.
Step 3: Main Body – Repeat Rows
- Row 2: Ch 3 (this counts as the first dc). Work dc in each st across the row. Turn your work.
- Repeat Row 2 (continuing with dc in each st) until the piece measures approximately 60″ in length (or your desired length). This will form the body of your poncho.
Step 4: Optional Stripes/Color Change
- For stripes or contrast, you can change to your Contrast Color Yarn at the beginning of the next row.
- To change colors, drop the main color yarn and sl st to join the contrast color yarn. Then continue with dc stitches as usual.
- Work the contrast color for as many rows as desired, then change back to the main color if preferred.
Step 5: Folding the Poncho
Once the body is the desired length, fold the piece in half lengthwise, bringing the two shorter edges together, so the length becomes 30″.
Step 6: Sewing the Sides
- Using a yarn needle, sew the two sides of the folded piece together, leaving a gap of approximately 9″ on each side for the arm openings.
- You can use a simple whip stitch to sew the sides together, making sure it’s neat and tight to prevent any gaps.
Step 7: Creating the Head Opening
- At the top of the folded poncho, leave a 13″ gap unsewn for the head opening.
- You can sew from the edges inward, leaving the middle 13″ section open.
Step 8: Finishing Edges (Optional)
- If you’d like to finish the edges of the poncho, you can add a sc border all the way around, including along the top (neckline), bottom, and arm openings.
- For the neckline, ch 1 at the start of each row and work sc evenly along the opening.
- For the arm openings, do the same to create a clean finish.
Step 9: Weaving in Ends
Use a yarn needle to weave in all the loose yarn ends from your work to ensure a tidy, professional finish.
Final Notes:
- The Main Color Yarn forms the base of the poncho, while the Contrast Color Yarn can be used for any stripes or detailing you wish to add.
- Be sure to keep track of the arm openings and head opening dimensions as you sew and finish the poncho to ensure the correct fit.
- You can modify the stitch patterns, colors, and borders to suit your personal style, making this poncho entirely customizable.
