Kaleidoscope Poncho

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn: Bulky weight yarn (approximately 125 yards per skein)
    • Main Color (A): 2 skeins
    • Accent Colors (B, C, D): 1-2 skeins each depending on your size
  • Crochet Hook: Size 10mm (N/P-15) hook or appropriate size to match the yarn gauge.
  • Additional Supplies:
    • Tapestry needle for finishing
    • Removable stitch marker to mark the beginning of rounds
  • Sizes:
    • Small/Medium: Fits bust size 32″-38″ (81-97 cm)
    • Large/XL: Fits bust size 40″-46″ (102-117 cm)
    • XXL: Fits bust size 48″-54″ (122-137 cm)
  • Gauge: 8 stitches x 6.5 rows = 4” (10 cm)

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • HDC = half double crochet
  • st = stitch
  • sp = space
  • rep = repeat

Stitching Instructions for Making Kaleidoscope Poncho Pattern:

Foundation Row:

  • Using Main Color (A), ch 61 (or adjust to desired width based on size).
  • Turn and HDC into the 2nd ch from the hook and across the chain (59 HDC in total).
  • After completing the row, join with a sl st to the first HDC.

Round 1:

Round 1
  • Ch 2 (this does not count as a stitch), HDC in the next st, ch 2, skip 2 sts, HDC in the next st — repeat from to around.
  • Join with a sl st to the first HDC. (You should have around 20-25 spaces, depending on your size.)

Round 2:

Round 2
  • Join Accent Color (B) in any ch-2 space with a sl st.
  • Ch 2 (this does not count as a stitch), HDC in the same space, ch 2.
  • HDC in the next space, ch 2 — repeat around.
  • Join with a sl st. Cut Accent Color (B).

Round 3:

Round 3
  • Join Accent Color (C) in any ch-2 space from the previous round with a sl st.
  • Ch 2 (this does not count as a stitch), HDC in the same space, ch 2.
  • HDC in the next space, ch 2 — repeat around.
  • Join with a sl st. Cut Accent Color (C).

Round 4:

Round 4
  • Join Accent Color (D) in any ch-2 space with a sl st.
  • Ch 2 (this does not count as a stitch), HDC in the same space, ch 2.
  • HDC in the next space, ch 2 — repeat around.
  • Join with a sl st. Cut Accent Color (D).

Round 5:

Round 5
  • Join Main Color (A) in any ch-2 space with a sl st.
  • Ch 2 (this does not count as a stitch), HDC in the same space, ch 2.
  • HDC in the next space, ch 2 — repeat around.
  • Join with a sl st.

Continue Rounds:

  • Continue alternating rounds between the main color and accent colors to achieve the kaleidoscope effect.
  • Repeat the sequence of rounds, changing colors as desired until the poncho reaches your preferred length.

Finish:

  • After reaching your desired length, finish the final rounds with Main Color (A).
  • Cut the yarn and fasten off. Weave in all loose ends with the tapestry needle.

Assembly:

  • Fold the poncho into a half-moon shape.
  • Use a whip stitch or sl st to join the sides, or leave them open for a more flowy look.
  • Optionally, you can add a decorative fringe to the bottom for a more boho-chic style.
