Easy Crochet Water Bottle Holder Pattern Stitching Steps

Creating the Base

The base of the bottle holder is crocheted in rounds using single crochet (sc) stitches to form a flat circle:

  • Round 1: Chain 4, slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring. Chain 1, and work 6 single crochets (sc) into the ring.
  • Round 2-6: Continue increasing by working two single crochets in each stitch in a strategic pattern:
    • Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch, totaling 12 stitches.
    • Round 3: (2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next stitch) repeat around (18 sc total).
    • Round 4-6: Continue this pattern, adding one additional single crochet between increases each round to keep the base flat. Round 6 should end with 36 stitches.

This forms a sturdy, round base for your bottle holder.

Building the Sides

After the base is complete, you’ll start creating the side walls of the bottle holder using a combination of shell and V-stitches for a decorative lacy effect.

  • Round 1: Chain 3, work 4 double crochets in the same stitch to form the first shell, chain 1.

Skip 5 stitches and repeat shell stitch (5 dc in the same stitch), chain 1 around. You should have six shells in total by the end of this round.

  • Round 2: Slip stitch into the middle stitch of the first shell, chain 3, work a V-stitch (1 dc, chain 3, 1 dc) in each chain-1 space between shells from the previous round. This forms a sturdy yet open pattern.
  • Round 3: Repeat the shell stitch in each chain-3 space from the previous round’s V-stitch.
  • Rounds 4-9: Alternate repeating Rounds 2 and 3 to build the height of the holder. Adjust the number of repeats based on the bottle height you need.

Leveling Row

To finish the top edge cleanly, work one row of single crochet around the top. This row also gives the piece added stability.

  • Leveling Row: Chain 1, work 1 single crochet in each double crochet and chain space around, then slip stitch to the beginning of the row.

Making and Attaching the Strap

The strap is created separately and then sewn onto the bottle holder for durability.

  • Foundation Chain: Using the larger hook, chain 154 (or 164 for a longer strap).
  • Rows 1-2: Work single crochet stitches across each chain to reinforce the strap’s thickness.
  • Slip Stitch Edge: To prevent the strap from stretching over time, work a round of slip stitches around the strap.
  • Attaching the Strap: Place one end of the strap behind a shell on the side of the holder, and sew it securely. Repeat with the other end of the strap on the opposite side.

Finishing Touches

The final step is all about refining the bottle holder to give it a polished look.

  • Weaving in Ends: With your tapestry needle, weave in any loose yarn tails, hiding them within the stitches. This step prevents the ends from unraveling and keeps your work looking neat.
  • Blocking (Optional): Blocking the bottle holder can help smooth out the stitches and ensure the pattern opens up evenly.

To block, dampen the holder slightly and shape it around an object of a similar size to the bottle it will hold. Allow it to dry completely.
