Measurements:
- Gauge:
- Toe: 11 sc = 2’’ (5 cm)
- Foot: 15 sc x 10 rounds = 2’’ (5 cm)
- Sizes:
- Circumference: 6’’ (15 cm), 7’’ (18 cm), 8’’ (20 cm), 9’’ (23 cm), 10’’ (25 cm)
- Length: Customizable to foot size.
Abbreviations:
- ch: Chain
- sc: Single Crochet
- st: Stitch
- BLO: Back Loop Only
- RS: Right Side
- WS: Wrong Side
- sl st: Slip Stitch
- fsc: Foundation Single Crochet
- herr-sc: Half-Double Crochet Stitch (the specific stitch name used in the pattern, a variation of HDC)

Stitching Instructions for Making the Fishbone Crochet Ankle Socks Pattern:
Toe
- Ch 11 to start.
- Round 1:
- Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
- Pivot work and sc in each ch across (20 sts).
- Note: You’re working into both sides of the chain, not turning.
- Rounds 2-4 (2-6, 2-7, 2-8, 2-9):
- [2 sc in marked st, sc in each st until 1 st remains before next marker, 2 sc in st before next marker] twice.
- Increase 4 sts each round, for a total of 32 (40, 44, 48, 52) sts after the last round.
- Rounds 5-8 (7-8, 8-10, 9-10, 10):
- Sc in each st around.
- 32 (40, 44, 48, 52) sts after last round.
- Sl st in first sc, do not fasten off.
- Toe section measurement: Should measure 1.5 (1.5, 2, 2, 2)’’ after Round 8.
Foot
- Round 1:
- Ch 1, working in BLO, RS herr-sc in each st around.
- Join with sl st in 1st st, turn.
- Round 2:
- Ch 1, WS herr-sc in each st around.
- Join with sl st in 1st st, turn.
- Round 3:
- Ch 1, RS herr-sc in each st around.
- Join with sl st in 1st st, turn.
- Round 4:
- Ch 1, WS herr-sc in each st around.
- Join with sl st in 1st st, turn.
- Repeat Rounds 3-4 until the total foot length is 1.5″ (1.5″, 2″, 2″, 2″) less than the required foot length (measure foot from toe to back of heel before starting).
- You may also use the Adult Woman or Man foot size chart from the Craft Yarn Council to determine the proper length for your shoe size.
- End after a WS round.
Heel Preparation
- First Sock:
- Fsc 16 (20, 22, 24, 26), skip 16 (20, 22, 24, 26) sts, RS herr-sc in remaining sts.
- Join with sl st in 1st st, turn (32, 40, 44, 48, 52 sts).
- Second Sock:
- Ch 1, RS herr-sc in 16 (20, 22, 24, 26) sts, fsc 16 (20, 22, 24, 26).
- Skip 16 (20, 22, 24, 26) sts, join with sl st in 1st st, turn (32, 40, 44, 48, 52 sts).
Leg
- Round 1:
- Ch 1, WS herr-sc in each st around.
- Join with sl st in 1st st, turn.
- Round 2:
- Ch 1, RS herr-sc in each st around.
- Join with sl st in 1st st, turn.
- Rounds 3-10:
- Repeat Rounds 1-2.
- After the last round, fasten off.
Heel
- Joining the Heel: Join yarn with sl st in corner of heel opening.
- Round 1: Sc in each st and fsc around (32, 40, 44, 48, 52 sts).
- Rounds 2-8 (2-8, 2-10, 2-10, 2-10):
- [Sc2tog over first 2 sts (move marker up), sc in each st around until next marker] twice.
- -2 sts each round for a total of 18 (26, 26, 30, 34) sts after last round.
- Final Round:
- [Sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in each st around until 2 sts remain before next marker, sc2tog over 2 sts before next marker] twice.
- -4 sts each round for a total of 26 (26, 26, 26) sts after the last round.
Finishing
- Seam Heel:
- Using a yarn needle, sew the heel closed through both thicknesses with sl st.
- Weave in any remaining ends and sew up any holes on the sides of the heel.
- Blocking: Block the socks lightly if desired.
