Stitching Instructions for Granny Balaclava Evolution Pattern:
Start with a Foundation Chain:
- Begin by making a foundation chain of approximately 44 stitches (or as specified by the pattern for your size).
First Row (Base of Granny Squares):
- Turn your work, and crochet a row of double crochet (dc) into each chain across. You should have the same number of stitches as the foundation chain.
Work in Granny Square Motif:
- After completing the first row, start forming the granny square pattern. Work in rounds, joining each round with a slip stitch (sl st) to close the circle.
- Round 1:
- Ch 3 (this counts as your first dc). Then, dc into the same stitch as your ch-3. This creates the first corner.
- Ch 2, then work 2 dc into the next stitch. Repeat this for each corner, forming four 2-dc corner clusters.
- Continue until you complete a square, joining with a sl st in the top of the ch-3.
- Round 2 and Following Rounds:
- For each new round, start with ch 3 (counts as your first dc) into the first stitch of the round.
- 2 dc in each corner space formed by ch-2 from the previous round. In between each corner, work 1 dc into each stitch from the previous round.
- Continue working in this pattern, expanding your square by adding more dc between the corner spaces. When you reach the end of each round, join with a sl st and move on to the next round.
Working in the Granny Square Evolution:
- Continue working granny squares in the same manner until you have created the desired number of squares.
- Join the squares together either by whip-stitching or slip-stitching along the edges, making sure to align the edges of the squares for a seamless join.
Finishing the Granny Balaclava:
- Once you have your required number of squares and have joined them into the balaclava shape, turn your work inside out (or right side in depending on the look you prefer).
- Use your needle to weave in any loose yarn ends.
- Optional: If desired, work a final round of single crochet (sc) along the edges to create a finished border.
Adding the Hood:
- Once the body of the balaclava is formed, work a few rounds of double crochet (dc) along the top to form the hood, ensuring it is large enough to fit comfortably.
- Shape the hood by decreasing stitches as necessary to fit snugly around your head, or leave the top open if you’re making a more fitted version.
Finishing:
- Use scissors to cut the yarn, leaving a small tail. Use a needle to weave in any loose ends for a clean finish.
