Little Crochet Chick Bean Bag Pattern

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn: 3 colors of worsted weight cotton yarn (e.g., Lion Brand’s 24/7 Cotton)
  • Hook: H-8/5 mm hook and G-6/4 mm hook
  • Other materials:
    • Small amount of black yarn or crochet thread for eyes
    • Dried beans or corn (or an alternative like expired popcorn kernels for the filling)
    • Fiberfill stuffing
    • Yarn needle and scissors
  • Finished Sizes:
    • Baby Chick: Approximately 3½ inches
    • Mama Chick: Approximately 4½ inches

  • sc = single crochet

Stitching Instructions for Making the Little Crochet Chick Bean Bag Pattern:

Body of the Chick:

  • Start with your H-8/5 mm hook and your yellow yarn (or desired color for the body).

    • Repeat this pattern around. (18 sts)
  • Round 11:Sc in the next st, dec in the next st around.
    • Sc in the next st, then dec in the next st.
    • Repeat this pattern around. (12 sts)
  • Round 12: Work dec in each stitch around.
    • Dec (sc 2 together) around. (6 sts)
  • Finishing the Body:
    • Fasten off the yellow yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.
    • Use the yarn needle to close the top by weaving the tail through the remaining 6 stitches and pulling tight to secure the opening.
    • Leave a small gap at the bottom to insert filling.

Feet (Make 2):

  • Switch to your G-6/4 mm hook and orange yarn.
  • Round 1:
    • Ch 5.
    • Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (4 sc). (4 sts)
  • Round 2:
    • Ch 1, turn.
    • Work sc in each st across (4 sc). (4 sts)
  • Round 3:

Beak:

  • Switch to your orange yarn.
  • Round 1:

    • Work sl st in 2nd ch from hook.
    • Work sl st in next ch.
    • This forms a small triangle shape.
  • Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing to the chick’s face.

Eyes (Make 2):

  • Use black yarn or crochet thread.
  • Round 1:
    • Create a small magic ring.
    • Work 6 sc into the ring. (6 sts)
  • Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing onto the chick’s face.

Assembly:

  • Stuffing the Body:
    • Fill the body with fiberfill stuffing and add your chosen filling material (dried beans, corn, or expired popcorn kernels) for the weight.
    • Be sure not to overstuff, so the chick retains its soft, squishy shape.
  • Attaching the Parts:
    • Using the long tails left from the feet, sew them onto the bottom of the chick’s body.
    • Attach the beak to the front of the chick’s head using the tail from the beak.
    • Position the eyes above the beak, and sew them into place using the black yarn’s tail.
  • Finishing the Body:
    • Using the yellow yarn’s long tail from the last round, sew up the opening at the top of the chick.
    • Ensure the body is securely closed, and the stuffing stays in place.

Optional Details:

  • Wings: You can add tiny wings to your chick by making small ch 4, then working sc across for 2-3 rows, and sewing them onto the body.
  • Tail Feather: Create a tiny tuft of feathers on the back of the chick using short pieces of yarn or a small series of chains.
