Step by Step Guide for Magic Slippers Pattern:
Step 1: Starting the Foundation Chain
- Ch 26(27, 28, 30, 32, 33) for the corresponding slipper size (e.g., 26 for size 5, 33 for size 10).
- This creates the foundation for the slipper’s sole. The number of chains varies based on the shoe size you’re making.
Step 2: Row 1 – Single Crochet (sc)
- In the second chain from the hook, sc across to the end of the row.
- You should have 25(26, 27, 29, 31, 32) stitches at the end of this row, depending on the slipper size.
- Turn the work.
Step 3: Row 2 – Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch (hslst)
- Ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch here and throughout).
- In the same stitch as the chain 1, hslst.
- Hslst across the row, working into each stitch until you reach the end.
- You should again have 25(26, 27, 29, 31, 32) stitches.
- Turn the work.
Step 4: Row 3 – Single Crochet (sc)
- Ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch here and throughout).
- In the same stitch as the chain 1, sc.
- Sc across the row to the end.
- At the end of this row, you should again have 25(26, 27, 29, 31, 32) stitches.
- Turn the work.
Step 5: Repeat Rows 2 and 3
- Repeat Row 2 (hslst) and Row 3 (sc) until the rectangle measures the following length based on the shoe size:
- Size 5: 8 inches
- Size 6: 8 inches
- Size 7: 8-1/2 inches
- Size 8: 8-1/2 inches
- Size 9: 9 inches
- Size 10: 9 inches
- Fasten off the yarn with a 1-1/2 yard tail for sewing the slipper together.
Step 6: Shaping the Slipper (Left and Right Slippers)
- Determine the Right Side and Left Side:
- The textured side is the right side of the slipper.
- The side with the two yarn tails is the ankle side.
- The opposite side of the rectangle forms the toe side.
Left Slipper – Cinching the Toe Side
- Place the rectangle textured side up with the toe side at the top.
- Starting from the right edge, fold in a little more than 1/3rd of the rectangle. Place a marker at the fold.
- Open the fold and use a 2-yard strand of yarn.
- Make a running stitch along the very edge of the marked part, ensuring you’re only catching one loop of the stitches.
- Pull the yarn ends to cinch the fold but do not pull too tight to avoid lumps.
- Tie the yarn ends securely to hold the cinched part and sew any remaining opening shut.
Right Slipper – Cinching the Toe Side
- Place the rectangle textured side up with the toe side at the top.
- Starting from the left edge, fold in a little more than 1/3rd of the rectangle. Place a marker at the fold.
- Open the fold and use a 2-yard strand of yarn.
- Make a running stitch along the very edge of the marked part, catching only one loop.
- Pull the yarn ends to cinch and sew the edges closed just like with the left slipper.
Step 7: Seaming the Ankle
- Fold the ankle side (where you have the yarn tails) in half.
- Align the top edges of the ankle.
- Using the yarn tail, seam along the ankle starting 1/2 inch inwards at the top. Work your way slanting down the middle and then seam along the edge to join both layers.
- Tie off the seam, leaving a small knot to secure it in place.
Step 8: Closing the Toe Side
- Turn the slipper right side out.
- For the left slipper, the flap should fold to the left, and for the right slipper, the flap should fold to the right.
- Insert your foot into the slipper (or, if making for someone else, just insert the toe part).
- Fold the flap over as far as it can go and sew the flap in place using the yarn tail left at the toe side, using a running stitch.
Step 9: Adding Buttons (Optional Embellishment)
- Sew on 2 or 3 buttons along the edge of the flap on each slipper for decoration.
- Weave in any remaining yarn tails along the inner side of the slipper to clean up the edges.
Finishing Touches
- Once all sewing and embellishment steps are completed, your Magic Slippers will be ready to wear!
