Stitching Instructions for Making the Mrs. Murdock’s Mittens Pattern:

Cuff:

  • Ch 10 (or the number of stitches that will comfortably fit around your wrist, based on your size).
  • Row 1: Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc across (you should have 9 sc). Note: If you are making the adult size, you may want to increase this starting chain length.
  • Row 2: Ch 1, turn, and sc across. Repeat for 4 more rows (Rows 3-5) to form a nice, stretchy cuff. You should have 5 rows of sc.
  • Join Cuff: At the end of Row 5, join the last stitch with a sl st to form a circle.
    • You will now be working in rounds, and this will be the base of the mitten.

Body of the Mittens:

  • Rnd 1 (Hand Opening): Ch 1, and work sc around the top edge of the cuff. Join with sl st to the first sc of the round. For Preschool size, this should be 24-28 stitches around depending on your tension.
  • Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Join with sl st to the first sc. Repeat this round until you reach the desired length of the mitten body for your size.
    • Preschool size: Continue for 7 rounds.
    • Older Kids’ size: Continue for 8-9 rounds.
    • Women’s size: Continue for 10-12 rounds.

Shaping the Mittens:

  • After completing the rounds for the mitten body, you will begin to shape the top of the mitten. In this section, you will decrease to close the top.
    Rnd 1:
    • Ch 1, sc in the next 2 stitches, then sc2tog (single crochet 2 together).
    • Repeat this pattern all the way around until you reach the last stitch.
    • Join with sl st.
  • Rnd 2:
    • Ch 1, sc2tog around (this will close the opening at the top of the mitten).
    • Join with sl st to the first stitch.
  • Fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail to close the top of the mitten. Using a yarn needle, thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tightly to close the mitten’s top. Secure the yarn and weave in the ends.

Thumb Opening:

  • After completing the body of the mitten, you will create a space for the thumb. To do this, leave a gap of about 6-8 sc stitches at the side of the mitten.
  • Continue working the mitten body around, skipping the space for the thumb.
    • Preschool size: Leave 6 stitches.
    • Older Kids’ and Women’s sizes: Leave 7-8 stitches for a larger thumb opening.
  • Once you reach the end of the round, join with sl st to close the first round of the mitten.
  • After the main body of the mitten is done, work in rows to complete the thumb. Start by working sc into the stitches just before and after the thumb gap. Work in the round to form the thumb.
    • Work in sc for several rounds until the thumb reaches the desired length.
  • Once you’ve reached the top of the thumb, decrease using sc2tog to close the top of the thumb.

Finish:

  • After finishing the body and thumb of the mitten, fasten off the yarn.
  • Use a yarn needle to weave in any loose ends.
  • Optional: For extra decoration, use a small amount of yarn to create stars or other designs on the mitten.

Repeat the pattern for the second mitten.
