Stitching Instructions for Making a Music Note Pillow Cover

Create the Foundation Chain

  • Begin by using the Main Color (MC) to make a foundation chain of 46 stitches.
  • This chain will form the base width of your pillow cover, which should measure about 17.5 inches (44 cm) across once the first few rows are complete.

Work Row 1 (Right Side – RS)

  • Start by inserting your hook into the 2nd chain from the hook and making a single crochet (sc) stitch.
  • Continue working sc in each stitch all the way across the row, resulting in 45 single crochet stitches.
  • At the end of the row, chain 1 to turn your work.

Work Row 2 (Wrong Side – WS)

  • Work sc in each stitch across the row, maintaining an even tension for a consistent look.
  • Chain 1 and turn at the end of the row.

Check Your Gauge

  • After a few rows, measure the width of your piece. It should be approximately 17.5 inches (44 cm) wide.
  • If it’s wider or narrower, adjust your hook size to achieve the correct gauge. This will help ensure your pillow cover turns out the right size.

Continue with Rows 3 – 7

  • Repeat the steps from Row 2 for Rows 3 through 7, working sc in each stitch across and chaining 1 at the end of each row.
  • After completing Row 7, double-check the width to ensure it’s still about 17.5 inches (44 cm).

Introduce the Contrast Color (CC) for the Music Note Design

  • Row 8 (WS):
    • Start the row with sc in the first 5 stitches using the Main Color (MC).
    • Then, attach a bobbin of Contrast Color (CC) and use it to work the next 7 stitches in CC.
    • After the 7 stitches in CC, switch back to MC and continue working the remaining 33 stitches in the row.
    • At the end of the row, chain 1 and turn your work.
  • Tip: Be mindful to carry any unused yarn on the wrong side of your work (WS) to keep the front side (RS) neat. When switching colors, let the yarn not in use rest on the inside of the pillow cover.

Follow the Color Pattern for Rows 9 – 48

  • For Rows 9 through 48, continue following the pattern to create the music note design.
  • Refer to the Pattern Chart Legend:
    • White Square: Single crochet with MC (for RS rows).
    • Light Grey Square: Single crochet with MC (for WS rows).
    • Dark Grey Square: Single crochet with CC.
    • Black Circle: Attach and use a bobbin.
  • Be sure to catch any loose yarn floats as you switch between MC and CC to keep the inside neat and prevent snagging.

Complete the Final Rows (Rows 40 – 48)

  • For the last few rows, switch back to only the Main Color (MC).
  • Work sc across each row for Rows 40 to 48, chaining 1 and turning at the end of each row.
  • This will create a solid background to finish the front panel.

Fasten Off and Tidy Up

  • After completing Row 48, fasten off both MC and CC yarns.
  • Weave in all loose ends, hiding the tails of each color in its respective color section (MC tails in MC areas and CC tails in CC areas) for a polished, professional look.

Assemble the Pillow Cover

  • After finishing the front panel with the music note design, make a back panel by following the same steps but using plain rows of single crochet with the Main Color.
  • Once both panels are complete, align the front and back panels with their edges matching.
  • Sew or crochet around the edges to join the panels, leaving one side open to insert the pillow form.
  • Insert your pillow form, then close the remaining edge using the same stitch you used for the other edges.

With these steps, you’ll have a beautifully handmade music note pillow cover, perfect for adding a touch of creativity to any space!
