Instructions for Making Skyshard Mosaic Cowl Pattern:

Foundation Row:

  1. Ch 80 (or the number needed for your desired circumference) using the MC (main color).
  2. Join to the first ch, being careful not to twist. You will now be working in the round.
  3. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st around. Join with a sl st in the top of the beginning ch-3.

Working in Mosaic Pattern:

  • Row 2:
    1. Switch to CC (contrast color).
    2. Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st around, ending with a sl st in the top of the ch-3 from the beginning of the round.
  • Row 3:
    1. Switch back to MC.
    2. Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st around, ending with a sl st in the top of the ch-3 from the beginning of the round.
  • Row 4:
    1. Switch to CC again.
    2. Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st around, ending with a sl st in the top of the ch-3 from the beginning of the round.

Mosaic Pattern:

Now you will begin the mosaic pattern with special stitches like DD (Diagonal Down) and DU (Diagonal Up) using the following technique:

  • Round 5:
    1. Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each of the next 3 sts.
    2. Work a DD stitch into the next 2 sts as follows:
      • Sk the first st, dc in the flo of the st 1 row below, then sc in the blo of the st above.
    3. Continue the pattern by working dc across the next 3 sts, and repeat the DD stitch where indicated by the pattern.
  • Round 6:
    1. Continue working in CC and follow the pattern of DU (Diagonal Up) stitches:
      • DU is worked over two stitches: sc in the blo of the first st, dc in the flo of the st 1 row below, and sk the next st.
    2. Repeat this around the cowl to create a mosaic effect using the CC and MC alternating between rows.

Ending the Cowl:

  • After several rounds of the mosaic pattern, you will reach the final round where you will transition to finishing your cowl.
  • Final Round:
    1. Ch 3 and work dc in each st around.
    2. Join with a sl st in the top of the ch-3 from the beginning.

Finishing:

  • Fasten off and weave in any loose ends using the tapestry needle.
  • Block your cowl to shape it as desired.
