Pattern Notes

  • The coaster is worked in continuous rounds (a spiral). Do not join at the end of each round. Use a scrap piece of yarn as a stitch marker, moving it up as you complete each round.
  • If you crochet tightly, you may need to go up a hook size. Conversely, if you crochet loosely, go down a hook size to match the gauge.
  • A Magic Ring is used to start the project, but you can substitute it with a chain-2 loop if preferred.

Stitching Instructions for The Sun’s Out! Crochet Drink Coasters Pattern:

Coaster Base

  • Rnd 1: Make a Magic Ring, then ch 1. Work 6 sc into the ring. Pull the tail of the ring to tighten the center. (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3: Work 1 sc in the next st, then 2 sc in the following st, repeat from to around. (18 sts)
  • Rnd 4: Work 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, then 2 sc in the next st, repeat from to around. (24 sts)
  • Rnd 5: Work 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, then 2 sc in the next st, repeat from to around. (30 sts)
  • Rnd 6: Work 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, then 2 sc in the next st, repeat from to around. (36 sts)
  • Rnd 7: Work 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, then 2 sc in the next st, repeat from to around. (42 sts)
  • At this stage, the base of the coaster should measure approximately 3 inches in diameter.

Flames (Sun Rays)

Rnd 8 (Flame Stitch Round):

  • Attach yarn to any st on the coaster base using a sl st.
  • Begin the first flame: ch 6.
    • Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work the following stitches along the chain:
      • 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook.
      • 1 hdc in the next ch.
      • 1 dc in each of the next 2 chs.
      • 1 sl st in the last ch.
  • Skip the next st on the coaster base, then secure the flame by working 1 sl st into the following st.
  • Repeat steps 2–3 all the way around the coaster base, creating one flame in each repeat. Ensure that you are skipping one st on the base between each flame.
  • Once you’ve created flames around the entire perimeter of the coaster, work a final sl st into the base of the first flame to close the round.

Finishing

  • Fasten off your yarn and trim the end.
  • Use a yarn needle to weave in all loose ends securely on the WS of the coaster.
  • If the coaster doesn’t lie completely flat, block lightly to shape and even out the flames.

Finished Measurements

The completed coaster should measure approximately 4.25 inches in diameter, including the flame stitch round.

Enjoy your sunny and cheerful crochet drink coasters!
