The Striped Chevrons Quilt Top is a quick, jelly roll-friendly baby quilt pattern. Using four 2.5″ fabric strips sewn into sets, you cut diamond shapes with a 60-degree ruler to form bold chevrons.

Preparation: Creating the Strip Set

  • Select Fabric Strips: Choose four strips of fabric for the quilt. Each of these strips should measure 2.5 inches by the Width of Fabric (WOF).
  • Piece the Strips: Sew the chosen four strips together along their long sides.
  • Divide the Strip Set: Once the four strips are pieced together, divide this completed strip set into two equal halves. Take one half of the blocks and set them aside.

Cutting the Diamond Pieces (First Direction)

The following steps utilize the half of the strip set that was not set aside. Note that the resulting chevron width is adjustable; the creator made hers 5 inches wide.

  • Establish the First Cut Angle: To begin cutting the diamond shapes, line up the 60 degree mark on your ruler so that it aligns with one of the seams within the strip set.
  • Make the Initial Cut: Once the 60 degree mark is correctly aligned, cut along the left side of the ruler.
  • Set the Chevron Width: Determine the desired width for the chevron pieces. To cut the first full diamond piece, align the newly cut edge of the fabric with the chosen measurement mark on your ruler (e.g., the 5-inch mark).
  • Align the Second Cut Angle: While maintaining the alignment of the cut edge with the measurement mark, ensure that the 60 degree mark on the ruler is also aligned with one of the seams.
  • Complete the First Diamond: Cut along the right edge of the ruler. This action produces the first diamond-shaped piece.
  • Repeat Cutting: Continue this cutting process, lining up the cut edge with the desired width and ensuring the 60 degree mark aligns with a seam, until all of the fabric in the first strip set half has been used up.

Cutting the Diamond Pieces (Opposite Direction)

The second set of cuts uses the reserved fabric strips.

  • Retrieve Reserved Strips: Obtain the half of the strip sets that were previously set aside.
  • Cut Opposite: Cut these reserved strips in the opposite direction compared to how the first half was cut.

Assembly and Finishing

The final construction steps assemble the individual diamond pieces into the quilt top.

  • Assemble into Columns: Piece the completed diamond-shaped fabric units together to form vertical columns.
  • Sew Columns Together: Once the individual columns are constructed, sew the columns to one another.
  • Trim the Edges: To complete the quilt top, trim along the top and bottom edges to create a straight, uniform edge.
