Birgitta’s Bookmark

Pattern Description:

This easy, quick-to-work pattern creates Birgitta’s Bookmark. It is a great last-minute gift for any booklover.

The main body is created by repeating rows 2 and 3 until the desired length is reached, and an optional border and fringe can be added for finishing.

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • chsp = chain space
  • slst = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half dc
  • dc = double crochet
  • shell = five double crochet in same stitch
  • sk = skip

Instructions for Making the Birgitta’s Bookmark Pattern:

Foundation Row

Chain 11 + 5.

  • Row 1:
    • Work sc in 8th stitch from hook.
    • Chain 4.
    • Skip 4 stitches, work sc in 5th stitch.
    • Chain 2.
    • Skip 2 stitches, work hdc in last stitch.
    • Turn.

Main Body (Repeat Rows)

  • Row 2:
    • Chain 1.
    • Work sc into same stitch.
    • Skip chain space.
    • Work 5 dc in following sc (this completes the first shell).
    • Slip stitch into chain 4 space.
    • Work 5 dc in next sc (this completes the second shell).
    • Skip 2 chains and work sc into 3rd chain.
    • Turn.
  • Row 3:
    • Chain 5.
    • Work sc into 3rd dc of shell.
    • Chain 4.
    • Work sc into 3rd dc of next shell.
    • Chain 2 and work dc into last stitch.
    • Turn.
  • Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the bookmark reaches the desired length.

Optional Border

Once the desired length is reached, work sc all around the bookmark. This helps make it sturdier and gives a finished look.

  • Top Edge:
    • Chain 1 and sc in the same stitch.
    • Work 3 sc in the chain space.
    • Skip stitch, work 4 sc in the next chain space.
    • Skip next stitch.
    • In the following chain space, work [3 sc, chain 1, 3 sc] – this forms the first corner.
  • Side Edge: Work 3 sc in each chain space down the side until you reach the bottom corner.
  • Bottom Edge:
    • In the bottom corner chain space, work [chain 1, 3 sc].
    • Skip stitch, work 4 sc, skip stitch again.
    • In the next chain space, work [3 sc, chain 1, 3 sc].
  • Other Side:
    • Work up the side as before, 3 sc in each chain space.
    • When you reach the top, slip stitch (or work an invisible join) into the first sc of the border.
    • Fasten off the yarn.

Final Touches

  • Add fringe if desired.
  • Block the bookmark to shape it nicely.
