Stitching Instructions for Making Crochet Rancher Poncho Pattern:

Foundation Chain:

  • Start with the required number of CH for your size:
    • X-Small & Small: 140 CH
    • Medium: 188 CH
    • Large: 204 CH
  • Join with a SL ST to the first CH to form a circle, ensuring the chain is not twisted.

Row 1: Base Round:

  • CH 3 (counts as 1st DC).
  • DC in each CH around (this forms the first round of the poncho).
  • Join the round with a SL ST into the top of the starting CH-3.

Row 2: Mesh Pattern Round:

  • CH 3 (counts as 1st DC).
  • Skip the next ST, DC in the next ST, CH 1 (this creates a mesh hole).
  • Repeat from to around (skip 1 ST, DC in the next ST, CH 1).
  • Join with a SL ST into the top of the starting CH-3.

Row 3 and onwards:

  • Repeat Row 2 until your work measures approximately 22-23 inches (56-58 cm) from the start or until you’ve achieved the desired length.
  • Continue joining each round with a SL ST into the top of the CH-3 at the beginning of each round.

Neck Opening (Rows 11-16 or Desired Length):

  • To create the neck opening, divide the work into two sections (front and back).
  • Mark the halfway point with stitch markers.
  • Work back-and-forth (rows, not rounds) on one section, turning your work at the end of each row.
    • Row 1: CH 3 (counts as 1st DC), DC in each ST across (repeat across the section).
    • Turn and repeat this for 5-6 rows, or as desired for the neck opening width.
  • After completing the neck opening, rejoin your yarn at the edges of the front and back sections, and continue working in rounds.

Rejoining for Circular Rounds:

  • Once the neck opening is complete, join yarn to the edge of the front section and begin working in rounds again.
  • Round 1 (Rejoin Round): CH 3 (counts as 1st DC), DC in each ST around, join with SL ST into the top of the starting CH-3.

Final Rounds:

  • Continue working in rounds until you reach the desired width (28-30 inches/71-72 cm).
  • Optional Border: Add a simple border around the poncho.
    • Round 1: SC in each ST around the edge. You may choose to add CH 1 between each SC for a lacy finish.

Finishing:

  • Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.
  • If desired, block the poncho gently to the finished measurements for a smoother and more polished look.

Additional Tips:

  • Adjusting Length: If you prefer a longer or shorter poncho, simply add or remove rounds in the body of the poncho to meet your preferred length.
  • Customizing Fit: You can easily adjust the width by increasing or decreasing the number of starting CHs.
  • Edging Options: Feel free to experiment with different edging options, such as a shell stitch or picot stitch, for a unique look.
