Free Bonnie’s Cross Pattern

Bonnie’s Cross

Pattern Description:

This pattern creates a CROSS BOOKMARK OR ORNAMENT made entirely IN ONE PIECE. Construction starts at the center by forming a ring.

The pattern works in rounds, then builds the arms one at a time, followed by the base. It can be made using one color or two colors (the second being the border). A tassel is attached to the bottom using a Larkshead knot.

Instructions for Making the Bonnie’s Cross Pattern:

Starting at Center

The pattern begins at the center. Ch 5 (or ch 6 or 7, depending on your choice of yarn and hook). Sl st in the first ch to form a ring.

  • RND 1: Ch 3 (this counts as the first dc). Work 2 dc in the ring. Ch 1. Work (3 dc in the ring, ch 1) 3 times. Sl st in the 3rd ch of the beg ch 3 to join. This round should result in 4 ch 1 sps.
  • RND 2: Ch 1, turn. Sl st in the first ch 1 sp. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the same ch 1 sp (this forms a “shell”). Ch 2. Work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the nxt ch 1 sp) (a shell is made).

Ch 2. Rep from twice more. Sl st in the 3rd ch of the beg ch 3 to join. This results in 4 shells. Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in the first ch 2 sp. You are now in position to begin the first arm.

Arms (Work One at a Time)

The arms are worked one at a time.

  • ROW 3: Ch 4 (this creates the first ch 4 sp). Work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the ch 1 sp of the nxt shell (this creates a “shell in shell”).
  • ROW 4: Ch 1, turn. Work 1 sl st in each of the nxt 2 dc. Sl st in the ch 1 sp of the shell. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, in the ch 1 sp of the shell (shell in shell is made). Work 1 trc in the first dc of the shell of the previous row (this trc stands as the second ch 4 sp).
  • ROW 5: Ch 4 (this creates the third ch 4 sp), turn. Work 2 dc, 1 trc, 2 dc in the ch 1 sp of the shell. Working along the side of the arm, work (ch 4, sl st in the top of the last dc of the shell of the prev row) twice.

Ch 4, 1 sc in the nxt ch 2 sp of Rnd 2. This row completes the arm, resulting in 6 ch 4 sps. You are now in position to start the nxt arm.

Repeat Arm Construction:

Rep Rows 3, 4, and 5 twice more to form the other two arms.

Base

The following rows complete the base section.

  • ROWS 6 – 11: Rep Rows 3 and 4 three more times.
  • ROW 12: Ch 4 (this forms the 7th ch 4 sp), turn. Work 2 dc, 1 trc, 2 dc in the ch 1 sp of the shell. Work 7 ch 4 sps along the opposite side of the base. Sl st in the sc in the nxt ch 2 sp of Rnd 2 to join.

Border

  • If you desire a different color border, you would switch colors at the end of Row 12.
  • RND 13: Work (sl st in the nxt ch 4 sp. ch 1, 3 sc in the ch 4 sp) 3 times. Work 1 sc in each of the nxt 2 dc.

Work 3 sc in the nxt trc. Work 1 sc in each of the nxt 2 dc. Work 4 sc in the nxt ch 4 sp. Work (sl st in the nxt ch 4 sp. ch 1, 3 sc in the ch 4 sp) twice. Continue the border around to the beg st. Finish off.

Tassel

Make a tassel and attach it to the bottom of the cross using a Larkshead knot. A Larkshead Knot is made the same way you would attach a fringe.
