Instructions for Making the Lacy Pineapple Bookmark Pattern:
Foundation Row
- Begin with ch 14.
- Work 1 dc in the 8th ch from hook, ch 2, sk next 2 ch, dc in next ch.
- Rep from to two more times. You’ll have four dc separated by chain-2 spaces.
- Ch 5 and turn your work.
Row 1 – Building the Base
- Dc in first dc, ch 2, dc in next dc across.
- End with ch 5, turn. This creates a ladder-like structure for your lace foundation.
Row 2 – Forming Pineapple Sections
- Dc in the first dc, ch 2, dc in next dc twice.
- In last dc: work (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) to form a shell.
- Ch 5, turn.
Row 3 – Expanding Lace
- Dc in top of shell, ch 2, dc in next dc, forming open spaces.
- End with (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in last shell.
- Ch 5, turn.
Continue this pattern, expanding with ch 2 spaces between pineapples while keeping shell clusters consistent. Each new row will gradually open up the lace, forming the signature pineapple pattern.
Rows 4-8 – Shaping the Pineapple
- Continue to increase chain spaces around the center shell on each side, forming a fan.
- To shape the lace points, skip the first dc group occasionally (as in traditional pineapple lace).
- Each pineapple section narrows toward the top as the number of chain spaces decreases.
As the motif forms, you’ll start to see open “eyelets” shaped like pineapples.
Row 9 – Creating the Tip
- Once your last pineapple narrows to a single loop (center space), make 1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in the center.
- This forms the tip of your bookmark.
- Ch 3, sl st to the next dc to secure. Fasten off.
Edging and Finishing
Now that the main body is done, it’s time to add a border for a neat, lacy finish.
- Attach thread at the base corner.
- Work sc evenly along the sides of the bookmark.
- In each corner, make (sc, picot, sc) for decorative points.
- Along the top and bottom edges, create ch 3, sk 1 st, sc in next st repeats to add a delicate scalloped look.
- Join with a sl st, fasten off, and weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.
Blocking and Stiffening
- Soak the bookmark in lukewarm water, gently squeeze out excess moisture (do not wring).
- Lay flat on a blocking mat or towel and stretch it into shape using pins.
- If you prefer a crisp finish, lightly spray with starch or apply diluted liquid starch.
- Let it dry completely before removing pins.
Optional Tassel
For a finishing touch:
- Cut 5-6 strands of matching thread about 6 inches long.
- Fold them in half and use a crochet hook to pull the loop through the tip of the bookmark.
- Pull loose ends through the loop and tighten. Trim evenly.
Final Look
Once blocked, your Lacy Pineapple Bookmark will display a beautiful, symmetrical lace pattern. The pineapple shapes will appear elegant and well-defined – perfect for gifting or personal keepsakes.
