Cascading Kimono Cardigan Crochet Pattern

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Suggested Yarn:
    • Lion Brand New Basic 175 Medium Weight Yarn in Whisper (6,7)
    • Note: This is a “chunky-like” worsted weight yarn.
  • Yarn Measurements: Approximately 600 grams (S/M) or 661 grams (L).
  • Gauge or Hook Size:
    • Hook Size: Size K 6.5mm crochet hook
    • Gauge: Approx. just over 3 stitches per inch.
  • Finished Pattern Size:
    • S/M:
      • Cross Back Measurement: Approx. 14” across
      • Finished Chest: Approx. 39.5”
      • Length: Approx. 31”
    • L:
      • Cross Back Measurement: Approx. 17” across
      • Finished Chest: Approx. 42.5”
      • Length: Approx. 31”
  • Other Tools:
    • Scissors
    • Tapestry Needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations Used:

  • sc2tog – Single crochet two together (decrease)
  • ch – Chain
  • dc – Double crochet
  • sc – Single crochet
  • ch-1 sp – Chain-1 space
  • dc in – Double crochet into
  • tie off – Cut the yarn and pull the end through the last stitch to secure it

Stitching Instructions for Making the Cascading Kimono Cardigan Crochet Pattern:

Textured Section

  • Row 1:
    • sc2tog in the 2nd and 3rd chain from hook.
    • Ch 1, sc2tog over the next 2 chains, and repeat from * to the last chain.
    • Ch 1, sc in the last chain.
    • (97 stitches)
  • Row 2:
    • Ch 1, turn.
    • sc2tog over the 1st stitch and the ch-1 space.
    • Ch 1, sc2tog over the next stitch and ch-1 space. Repeat from * to the last stitch.
    • Ch 1, sc in the last stitch.
  • Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures approximately 4 inches.

Single Crochet Section

  • Row 1:
    • Ch 1, turn.
    • Sc in each stitch across (97 stitches).
  • Repeat Row 1 for approximately 2 inches. (At this point, the entire piece should measure approximately 6 inches.)

Textured Section II

  • Repeat Row 2 from the Textured Section for approximately 1 inch. (At this point, the entire piece should measure approximately 7 inches.)

Double Crochet Section

  • Row 1:
    • Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), turn.
    • Dc in the 2nd stitch of the row and in each stitch across (97 stitches).
  • Rows 2 – 9:
    • Repeat Row 1.
    • (Note that the final dc of each row is worked into the top of the turning ch-3.)

First Arm Opening

  • Row 10:
    • Place stitch markers at the 22nd and 43rd stitch from the end of the piece (this will be referred to as the top of the piece).
    • Ch 3, turn, dc in the 2nd stitch of the row and in each stitch across to the stitch marker.
    • Ch 22 loosely, then dc into the 44th stitch from the beginning and dc in each stitch across to the end of the row.
    • (97 stitches)
  • Row 11:
    • Ch 3, turn, dc in the 2nd stitch of the row and in each stitch across (including into each ch stitch made at the arm opening).
    • (97 stitches)
  • Repeat Row 1 for 9 more rows, or until the piece measures approximately 14” (for S/M) or 17” (for L) from the arm opening.

Second Arm Opening

  • Place stitch markers at the 22nd and 43rd stitch from the top of your piece (the arm openings should line up evenly).
  • Work dc stitches across to the stitch marker, ch 22 loosely, and attach to the stitch following the stitch marker with a dc.
  • Dc in each stitch across to the end of the row. (97 stitches)
  • Repeat Row 1 for 9 more rows.
  • Repeat Textured Section II and Single Crochet Section again.
  • Repeat Row 2 of the Textured Section for approximately 4 inches.
  • Tie off and weave in ends.

Sleeves

  • Attach yarn to the sleeve opening.
  • Round 1:
    • Ch 3, which counts as a dc stitch.
    • Dc evenly around the sleeve opening.
    • Slip stitch to join at the end of the round.
  • Repeat Round 1 for nine more rounds, or until the sleeve is as long or short as you like.
  • Tie off and weave in ends.
