Stitching Instructions for Making the Chunky Crochet Basket Pattern:

Base of the Basket:

The base is worked in rounds using single crochet increases to create a flat, circular bottom.

  • Start with a Magic Ring (MR)
    • Create a Magic Ring and pull it tight to form a neat center.
    • Round 1: ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), work 6 sc into MR, pull tight, sl st to first sc to join. (6 sts)
    • Round 2: ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around (increase in every stitch), sl st to join. (12 sts)
    • Round 3: ch 1, (sc in next st, inc in next st) repeat around, sl st to join. (18 sts)
    • Round 4: ch 1, (sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st) repeat around, sl st to join. (24 sts)
    • Round 5: ch 1, (sc in next 3 sts, inc in next st) repeat around, sl st to join. (30 sts)
    • Round 6: ch 1, (sc in next 4 sts, inc in next st) repeat around, sl st to join. (36 sts)
    • Round 7: ch 1, (sc in next 5 sts, inc in next st) repeat around, sl st to join. (42 sts)

If a larger base is needed, continue increasing rounds using the pattern (sc in next X sts, inc in next st) until the desired size is reached.

Building the Sides:

Once the base is complete, the sides are worked without increasing. This helps the basket take shape and creates vertical structure.

  • Round 8 (Transition Round for Firm Structure):
    • ch 1, sc in blo of each st around, sl st to join. (42 sts)
    • This round helps create a defined edge between the base and the sides, giving the basket a clean, crisp shape.
  • Rounds 9-20 (Building the Height):
    • ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to join. (42 sts)
    • Work in continuous rounds for a seamless look, or join at the end of each round for an even edge.
    • For a textured look, try alternating blo and flo sc every other round.
    • To make the walls stiffer, substitute hdc for sc in every alternate round.

Optional Handles:

Handles add functionality and allow for easy transport. They are made by chaining over a section of stitches and continuing the round as normal.

  • Round 21 (Creating Handle Openings):
    • ch 1, sc in next 10 sts,
    • ch 5 (skip 5 sts for handle opening),
    • sc in next 12 sts,
    • ch 5 (skip 5 sts for second handle opening),
    • sc in remaining 10 sts, sl st to join. (42 sts)
  • Round 22 (Reinforcing the Handles):
    • ch 1, sc in each st around, making sure to crochet into each ch from the previous round as well, sl st to join. (42 sts)

Finishing Touches:

  • The final round creates a smooth edge to enhance durability and give the basket a professional look.

Final Round (Edging for a Sturdy Finish):

  • ch 1, sl st in each st around, sl st to join.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends securely using a yarn needle.
