The Crochet Simple Ripple Blanket uses double crochet stitches. These stitches form soft waves. Add stitches to make the peaks. Work decreases to make the dips. Learn the first two rows. Then repeat the same row to build the blanket.
Each row has ten ripple repeats. Five yarn colors make wide stripes. Use the shades shown below. Or choose shades that suit your room.
This pattern was written for this request. The size and yarn amounts are rough estimates. Make a small swatch before you start.
Skill Level
Confident beginner.
You should know how to chain, work double crochet, count stitches, and change yarn colors. Instructions for the decrease stitch are included below.
Size
About 40 × 50 inches, with no border, if you meet the gauge.
To change the width, use a starting chain in a multiple of 13, plus 2.
Each extra repeat adds about 4 inches at the stated gauge. Add or remove rows to change the length.
Materials
- Yarn: Worsted-weight yarn, Category 4.
- Total yarn: About 1,400–1,700 yards.
- Color A — Cream: About 280–340 yards.
- Color B — Light blue: About 280–340 yards.
- Color C — Sage: About 280–340 yards.
- Color D — Warm gray: About 280–340 yards.
- Color E — Dusty rose: About 280–340 yards.
- Hook: US H/8, 5.0 mm. Use the size needed to meet gauge.
- Yarn needle.
- Scissors.
- Measuring tape.
- Stitch markers.
Use yarns of the same weight. Choose yarns with similar fiber content. All five colors should need the same care.
Gauge: Wash and dry the swatch, then check its size. One 13-st ripple repeat should be about 4 inches wide. Eight rows should be about 4 inches tall.
Measure the width straight across the fabric. Do not measure along the wave.
Abbreviations
- ch: Chain.
- dc: Double crochet.
- dc2tog: Double crochet two stitches together.
- st / sts: Stitch / stitches.
- rep: Repeat.
- RS: Right side.
- WS: Wrong side.
- A–E: Yarn colors listed above.
Pattern Notes
- Use US crochet terms.
- Work flat in rows.
- Turn at the end of each row.
- The first ch 2 does not count as a st.
- After Row 1, use both loops.
- Each wave repeat has 13 sts.
- Each full row has 130 sts.
- Work each dc2tog across the next two sts. Do not skip a st.
- To change yarn colors, use the new yarn for the last pull-through of the last st.
- Work 5 rows per stripe.
- Work 100 rows in all.
- Leave an 8-inch tail when you join or cut yarn.
Stitch Explanations
Double Crochet — dc
- Yarn over.
- Put the hook in the stated ch or st.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop. You now have three loops.
- Yarn over and pull through two loops.
- Yarn over and pull through the last two loops.
Double Crochet Two Together — dc2tog
This stitch turns two stitches into one.
- Yarn over.
- Put the hook in the next ch or st.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop.
- Yarn over and pull through two loops. Keep two loops on the hook.
- Yarn over.
- Put the hook in the next ch or st.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop.
- Yarn over and pull through two loops. Three loops are on the hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all three loops.
Ripple Peak
Work 3 dc in the same st.
These three stitches form the top of the wave. On the next row, work the new peak into the middle dc of this group.
Ripple Dip
Work a dc2tog at the end of one repeat, then another dc2tog at the start of the next repeat.
These two decreases sit beside each other and form the dip between waves.
Color Change
Change yarn colors in the row’s last dc2tog.
- Work the dc2tog until three loops are left on the hook.
- Drop the old yarn.
- Yarn over with the new yarn.
- Pull the new yarn through all three loops.
- Cut the old yarn. Leave an 8-inch tail.
- Use the new yarn for the next row.
Color
Work five rows in each color, in this order:
| Color | Rows in First Sequence |
|---|---|
| A — Cream | 1–5 |
| B — Light blue | 6–10 |
| C — Sage | 11–15 |
| D — Warm gray | 16–20 |
| E — Dusty rose | 21–25 |
Repeat this 25-row color sequence four times for a total of 100 rows.
Each color appears in four stripes.
Pattern Instructions
Step 1: Make a Gauge Swatch
Use one of the five colors.
- Ch 41. This makes three ripple repeats. It also adds two turning chains.
- Work Row 1 below. Rep the stitch sequence three times. 39 sts.
- Use Row 2 for each row from then on.
- Work until the swatch has at least 12 rows.
- Wash and dry it as the yarn label states.
- Lay it flat. Do not stretch it.
- Check the width of the middle ripple repeat. It should be about 4 inches wide.
- Check the height of eight rows in the center. They should be about 4 inches tall.
If the swatch is too small, try a larger hook. If it is too large, try a smaller hook.
Step 2: Make the Starting Chain
With A, ch 132.
Keep the chains loose enough to work into with ease. The first two chains form the turning chain and do not count as a stitch.
Step 3: Work Row 1
Start in the third ch from the hook.
Row 1:
- Dc2tog over the third and fourth ch from the hook.
- Dc in each of the next 4 ch.
- Work 3 dc in the next ch.
- Dc in each of the next 4 ch.
- Dc2tog over the next 2 ch.
- Rep Steps 1–5 nine more times across the row. Start each new repeat in the next unused ch.
- Turn.
Count: 130 sts — ten repeats of 13 sts.
You should have used all the chains past the two turning chains.
Step 4: Work Row 2
Row 2:
- Ch 2.
- Dc2tog over the first 2 sts.
- Dc in each of the next 4 sts.
- Work 3 dc in the next st.
- Dc in each of the next 4 sts.
- Dc2tog over the next 2 sts.
- Rep Steps 2–6 nine more times across.
- Turn.
Count: 130 sts.
Each group of 3 dc should sit in the middle dc of the peak below.
Do not work into the turning ch.
Step 5: Finish the First Stripe
Rows 3–5: Rep Row 2 with A.
On the final dc2tog of Row 5, change to B.
You now have one five-row cream stripe.
Step 6: Work the Next Four Stripes
Continue to rep Row 2.
- Rows 6–10: Use B. Change to C at the end of Row 10.
- Rows 11–15: Use C. Change to D at the end of Row 15.
- Rows 16–20: Use D. Change to E at the end of Row 20.
- Rows 21–25: Use E. Change to A at the end of Row 25.
Keep 130 sts in each row.
Step 7: Repeat the Color Sequence
Continue with five rows per color.
- Rows 26–50: A, B, C, D, then E.
- Rows 51–75: A, B, C, D, then E.
- Rows 76–100: A, B, C, D, then E.
Work every row as Row 2.
After Row 100, fasten off. Leave an 8-inch tail.
Step 8: Check the Blanket
Lay the blanket flat.
- Count ten peaks across a row.
- Check that each stripe has five rows.
- Check that the sides lie flat.
- Look for any missed stitches or extra increases.
For an easy stitch check, place a marker in the middle dc of each peak. Move the markers up as you work.
Step 9: Weave In the Ends
- Turn the blanket so the WS faces up.
- Thread a yarn tail through the yarn needle.
- Weave it through nearby stitches of the same color.
- Change direction and weave back through a few more stitches.
- Keep the yarn loose enough for the fabric to lie flat.
- Trim the end.
- Rep for all tails.
Step 10: Wash and Shape
Wash and dry the blanket as directed on the yarn label.
While damp, lay it flat and smooth the sides. Shape the peaks and dips with your hands. Let it dry fully.
The blanket is finished with its natural ripple edges and no added border.
