Stitching Instructions for Making Driftwood Oversized Crochet Hooded Poncho Pattern:

Poncho Base

  • Foundation Chain:
    • Ch 99 (or any multiple of 3 to adjust for desired width).
    • Make sure the chain is not twisted.
    • Join the chain with a sl st to the first chain to form a circle.
  • Round 1 (Base Row):
    • Ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch).
    • Work sc in each ch around the circle.
    • Join with a sl st to the first sc.
  • Round 2 (Begin the Pattern):
    • Ch 2 (counts as a hdc).
    • Work hdc in the next 2 sts, ch 1, skip the next st.
    • Repeat from to around the entire round.
    • Join with a sl st to the top of the starting ch 2.
  • Rounds 3–25 (Body of the Poncho):
    • Ch 2 (counts as hdc).
    • Work hdc in the next 2 sts, ch 1, skip the next st.
    • Repeat this sequence around the round.
    • Join with a sl st to the top of the starting ch 2.
    • Continue working in this pattern for Rounds 3 to 25, or until the poncho reaches the desired length of 21.5″ tall.
  • Optional Edging for the Poncho (Finishing the Bottom):
    • Ch 1, then sc evenly along the entire bottom edge of the poncho for a clean, polished finish.
    • Fasten off and use a tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends.

Hood Construction

  • Foundation Chain:
    • Ch 40 (or enough to reach 10″ deep, adjust accordingly).
    • Turn the chain to work in the back loops only.
  • Row 1 (Initial Row):
    • Dc into the 3rd ch from the hook and each ch across.
    • You should have 38 dc stitches after this row.
    • Turn your work.
  • Rows 2–25 (Forming the Hood):
    • Ch 2 (counts as dc), then dc into each stitch across the row.
    • Turn your work.
    • Repeat this step for Rows 2 to 25, or until the hood measures 12.5″ tall.
  • Shaping the Hood:
    • Once the hood has reached the desired height, fold the rectangle in half widthwise, aligning the shorter sides to form the hood shape.
    • Using a sl st or a whipstitch, sew the top edge of the hood together to close it.
    • Fasten off the yarn and weave in the loose ends.

Joining the Hood to the Poncho

  • Positioning the Hood:
    • Find the center of the poncho’s neckline.
    • Position the bottom edge of the hood around the neckline, ensuring it is centered and even.
  • Attaching the Hood:
    • Use stitch markers to hold the hood in place around the neckline.
    • Using a sl st or a tapestry needle and sl st, carefully join the bottom of the hood to the poncho.
    • Work in even stitches to securely attach the hood to the poncho.

Finishing Touches

  • Edging for the Hood (Optional): Ch 1, then sc evenly around the edge of the hood’s opening to create a smooth, finished look.
  • Weaving in Ends:
    • Use a tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends from the poncho and hood.
    • Ensure all yarn tails are securely tucked into the fabric to prevent unraveling.
