Free Titan Tapestry Crochet Bag Pattern

Titan Tapestry Crochet Bag

Pattern Description:

The Titan Tapestry Crochet Bag is a stylish, high-end crossbody purse. This project is created using the tapestry crochet technique, working in continuous rounds.

All stitches are single crochet worked through the back loop only (BLO), and the unworked yarn is consistently carried along the row. The pattern uses a repeating 10-stitch chart to achieve the design.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

Measurements

The finished size of the bag body is 11” wide by 10-1/2” tall (excluding the strap and strap tabs).

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton Yarn in Jade and Ecru.
    • You will need 3.5 oz of each color.
    • It is suggested that you purchase a second skein, especially of the Ecru, just in case slightly more is used.
  • Hook: US C2/2.75 mm crochet hook.
  • Strap/Hardware:
    • Leather 1″ adjustable 34″–55″ Crossbody strap with clips.

  • BLO – back loop only

Instructions for Making the Titan Tapestry Crochet Bag Pattern:

Base of Bag

This section establishes the continuous round structure of the bag.

  • Ch 70.
  • R1: Work 2 sc in the 2nd ch from hook.
  • Sc across (one sc in each ch) to the last ch.
  • Work 3 sc in the last ch.
  • Rotate the work to sc on the opposite side of the starting chain.
  • Sc across until you reach the last st (which is the original spot where you placed the starting 2 sc).
  • Work 1 sc in the 1st ch.

You should now have 140 st exactly, with three sc at either end of the foundation chain. Do NOT join; continue working in the round, placing a marker in the last st of the round.

Body of Bag (Following Chart)

  • Follow the tapestry crochet chart, starting at the bottom right (line 1). Work in BLO in continuous rounds. Remember to always carry the unused color yarn.
  • Continue following the chart until R45 is complete.
  • After completing R45, continue using the ecru yarn, working over the unused jade yarn, and work 1 more round of sc.
  • At the end of this final round, sl st into the next st.
  • Finish off the body of the purse using an invisible seamless join.

Handle Tabs (Make 2)

The tabs are made separately and later attached to hold the O-rings.

  • Ch 5.
  • R1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in the next 3 ch (4 st).
  • R2–10: Turn work and Ch 1, sc across (4 st).
  • Fasten off, leaving a long strand for sewing to the bag.
  • Slip each handle tab into a 1″ O-Ring and fold the tab over.
  • To attach, place the bag with the right side facing you. Attach the tabs inside the bag to the back side, positioning them about 1/4″ from each folded end. Sew down securely, ensuring the stitches remain only on the inside of the bag. It is recommended to sew the tabs in before adding any lining.

Finishing & Closure Options

The bag is sturdy, but closures and linings are optional.

  • Button/Chained Loop: To create a closure, in the final round of sc, locate the center of the back side of the bag. Ch enough chains to loop over the bag to the front and around a button. Sl st into the last sc made on the bag to close the loop, then continue working the remainder of the stitches in that final round.
  • Zipper: A zipper can be attached without a lining by hand sewing it carefully in place. A purse zipper is suggested due to its heavy-duty nature, long pull, and wider tape area, making it easier to sew into a handbag.

Lining (Optional)

If a lining is desired, you will need fabric, medium-weight iron-on interfacing, and a magnetic closure or purse zipper.

  • Iron the interfacing to the back of the fabric.
  • Measure your bag, add 1/2″ to all sides, and cut 2 fabric pieces to this size.
  • Sew around 3 sides with a 1/2″ seam allowance.
  • Insert the lining into the bag to determine the placement for the top fold (it should sit about 1 row below the top edge).
  • Remove the lining and iron the fabric over in the marked spot (typically 1/2″ to 1″).
  • Hand sew the finished lining securely to the inside of the bag.

Weave in all ends securely, attach your chosen strap, and enjoy your beautifully handcrafted Titan Tapestry Crochet Bag!
