Stitching Instructions for Making the Free Modern + Chunky Crochet Blanket Pattern:

Foundation Chain:

  • CH 125 + 1 to create your foundation chain. This gives you the width of the blanket, and the additional chain (the +1) will act as your turning chain.

Rows 1-4:

  • SC (Single Crochet) across each of the stitches in the chain (125 stitches total).
  • After completing the row, CH 1 to turn and move to the next row.
  • Repeat for 4 rows, using SC for each stitch across the row.

Row 5 (Start Even Moss Stitch):

  • SC x 3 ST: Begin with 3 single crochets for the border on the left side.
  • <HDC 1, SL ST 1>: Alternate between half double crochet (HDC) and slip stitch (SL ST) for the next 117 stitches. You will begin with HDC (since this is an odd row).
    • HDC: Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over again, and pull through all three loops on your hook.
    • SL ST: Insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, and pull through both loops on your hook.
  • After completing the 117 stitches of the Even Moss Stitch (EMS), finish with 3 SC at the end of the row for the border on the right side.
  • CH 1 to turn and get ready for the next row (Row 6).

Row 6 (Continue Even Moss Stitch):

  • SC x 3 ST: Start with 3 single crochets for the left-side border.
  • <SL ST 1, HDC 1>: Alternate between slip stitch (SL ST) and half double crochet (HDC) for the next 117 stitches. This time, start with SL ST (since this is an even row).
    • SL ST: Insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, and pull through both loops on your hook.
    • HDC: Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over again, and pull through all three loops on your hook.
  • After completing the 117 stitches of EMS, finish with 3 SC for the right-side border.
  • CH 1 to turn and get ready for the next row (Row 7).

Rows 7 to 109 (Alternate EMS Stitches):

  • Continue alternating between rows of HDC and SL ST for the Even Moss Stitch:
    • Odd rows (Row 7, 9, 11, etc.): Start with HDC and continue the pattern of alternating HDC and SL ST for the 117 EMS stitches.
    • Even rows (Row 8, 10, 12, etc.): Start with SL ST and continue the pattern of alternating SL ST and HDC for the 117 EMS stitches.
  • Always finish with 3 SC for the border and CH 1 to turn at the end of each row.
  • Repeat this alternating pattern of EMS for a total of 105 rows (rows 7 to 109).

Rows 110 to 113 (Final Rows):

  • SC across each stitch in the row (125 stitches total). This helps to finish the edges with a clean single crochet border.
  • After completing the final row, tie off the yarn and use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.

Additional Tips:

  • EMS Stitch Structure: The Even Moss Stitch (EMS) alternates between HDC and SL ST within the body of the blanket. You must keep track of which stitch (HDC or SL ST) starts the pattern in each row:
    • Odd rows (starting from Row 5) begin with HDC.
    • Even rows (starting from Row 6) begin with SL ST.
  • Border: The first 3 and last 3 stitches of each row are always SC. These act as the built-in border for the blanket, so you won’t need to add a separate border at the end of the project.
  • Tracking Stitches: To help with counting, place a stitch marker after the first 3 SC stitches at the start of each row, and also after the last 3 SC stitches at the end. This will help you stay consistent with your stitch count and ensure you don’t miss any important steps.
