Stitching Instructions for Making Uptown Poncho Pattern:
Foundation Row:
- Ch 59 (S/M), 64 (L/XL), or 69 (2XL/3XL) depending on the size you’re making.
- This foundation chain determines the width of your poncho. You may adjust it to make it slightly wider or narrower if needed. Ensure your chain is loose enough to avoid any tightness in the first row.
Row 1 (Start with Herringbone Half Double Crochet – hhdc):
- Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch).
- Hhdc in the 3rd ch from the hook.
- Continue to hhdc across the row.
- Hhdc stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), pull the first loop through the second loop, and then pull the second loop through the third.
- When you reach the end of the row, turn your work.
Row 2 and Subsequent Rows:
- Ch 2 (this does not count as a stitch).
- Work hhdc across the row into each stitch of the previous row.
- At the end of the row, turn your work.
- Repeat this process for each row until you reach the desired length:
- S/M: 64 inches long
- L/XL: 66.5 inches long
- 2XL/3XL: 69 inches long
- Ensure your rows are consistent and that each hhdc is worked into the top of the previous row’s stitch.
Shaping the Poncho:
- The piece is worked flat, so after completing the body to the desired length, it will be folded in half to form the poncho.
- The width remains the same throughout, with the poncho’s length being determined by the number of rows you complete.
Seaming:
- After completing the length, fold the poncho in half with the right sides facing each other.
- Using a sl st or whip stitch, seam up both sides of the poncho, leaving the top open for the head.
- Ensure the seams are secure but not too tight to avoid any stretching of the fabric. You may use the sl st method for a cleaner look, as it blends into the fabric.
Adding the Buttons:
- Decide where you want to position the buttons. Typically, the buttons are placed on the left or right side edge of the poncho for easy fastening.
- Use a tapestry needle and the yarn you’ve been working with to sew the buttons securely.
- For S/M, attach 4 buttons.
- For L/XL and 2XL/3XL, attach 5 buttons.
- Make sure the buttons are spaced evenly, with enough room between them for easy fastening but not too much space to cause gaps.
Finishing Touches:
- Weave in all loose yarn ends using a tapestry needle to secure them within the poncho fabric.
- Block your poncho to the desired dimensions. This will help the fabric lay flat and give the poncho a finished, polished look.
- To block: Wet your poncho gently, lay it flat on a surface, and use pins to stretch it to the correct size. Allow it to dry completely.
