Step by Step Stitching Instructions for Haylee Throw Pillow
1. Front Panel
To start, create the front panel by chaining the required number of stitches for your desired pillow size. For example, if you are making a 12″ pillow, chain 47 stitches.
Begin crocheting with HDC into the third chain from the hook and continue across the row. For the next rows, chain 1, turn, and continue to HDC across each stitch.
Follow this pattern until you reach the total row count required for your chosen pillow size.
This panel forms the main front piece of your pillow cover. Once complete, fasten off the yarn and set the piece aside.
2. Back Bottom Panel
For the back bottom panel, start by chaining the same number of stitches as you did for the front panel, ensuring that each side matches in width.
For example, if you made 47 chains for the front, chain the same here. Work an HDC into the third chain from the hook and continue with HDCs across the row.
For each following row, chain 1, turn, and HDC across. Continue this sequence until reaching about half the height of the front panel.
Fasten off when complete, creating a piece that will later form part of the back opening.
3. Back Top Panel
The back top panel is similar to the back bottom panel but slightly taller. Chain the same number of stitches as in the front and bottom back panels, ensuring a uniform width. HDC in the third chain from the hook and work across the row with HDC stitches.
After finishing each row, chain 1, turn, and continue with HDC across. Repeat until you reach the specified row count for the back top panel, making it slightly longer than the back bottom panel.
This will create the overlapping section needed for the pillow opening. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
4. Assemble the Panels
With the front panel face down, place the back bottom panel on top, aligning its bottom edge with the front panel’s bottom edge.
Next, position the back top panel on the front panel, with its top edge aligned with the front’s top edge.
The back top and bottom panels will overlap in the center, forming an envelope-style closure. This overlap will allow the pillow insert to be inserted and removed as needed.
Double-check that all edges are evenly aligned, as this ensures a smooth look when crocheting the panels together in the next steps.
5. Pin Panels Together
Using sewing pins or clips, carefully secure all three panels in place, focusing on keeping edges aligned and the overlap even.
Pin along each side, corner, and any point that may shift to prevent movement while adding the border.
This step ensures the back panels do not shift while you crochet around the edges. By pinning, you create a temporary hold that makes it easier to crochet through the layers without adjustments.
This step helps keep your work smooth and even, especially at the overlapping section in the middle of the back.
6. Attach Border
With the front side of the pillow cover facing up, attach yarn in any corner stitch, making sure to work through both layers.
Chain 1 to begin, and work SC stitches evenly around the edges, joining the front and back panels securely.
To create clean corners, work “SC, chain 1, SC” in each corner stitch, giving the border a neat appearance.
Continue working SC stitches evenly around, keeping the stitches tight for a finished look.
Once you reach the starting point, slip stitch to join to the first SC, fasten off, and secure the yarn end.
7. Finishing
After completing the border, weave in any loose yarn ends to keep your work clean and tidy. Turn the cover right side out and ensure all edges are aligned neatly.
Slide the pillow form into the cover through the overlapping back panels, adjusting as needed to make it snug and smooth.
The envelope-style back allows easy removal of the pillow insert for cleaning or changing the cover.
Your crochet pillow cover is now ready for display. Enjoy your cozy, handmade addition, which can be customized in various colors and sizes to suit any decor!
