Base of the Bag

  • Bottom of the bag (rectangular base):
    • With cream yarn and 4mm hook, ch 20.
    • Row 1: Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each ch across. (19 sts)
    • Row 2-8: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (19 sts per row)
  • Work around the rectangle to shape the base:
    • Round 1: Without turning, work around all sides of the rectangle:
      • sc evenly along one long edge, place 3 sc in the corner,
      • sc along the short edge, place 3 sc in the corner,
      • sc along the opposite long edge, place 3 sc in the corner,
      • sc along the final short edge, place 3 sc in the corner.
      • Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Body of the Bag

  • Build the height of the bag:
    • Round 2: ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st.
    • Round 3-20: Repeat Round 2 to create the height of the bag. You can adjust the number of rounds for your desired bag height.
  • Optional color change (for stripes):
    • To add stripes, switch to pink yarn for a few rounds:
      • Round 10-12: Switch to pink yarn and hdc in each st around.
      • Return to cream yarn for the remaining rounds.

Ears

  • Outer ears (make 2):
    • With cream yarn and 3mm hook:
      • Round 1: Start with a magic ring, 6 sc in the ring. (6 sts)
      • Round 2: hdc-inc in each st around. (12 sts)
      • Round 3: hdc in each st around. (12 sts)
      • Round 4: hdc in next st, hdc-inc; repeat around. (18 sts)
      • Round 5: hdc in each st around. (18 sts)
      • Round 6: hdc in next 2 sts, hdc-dec; repeat around. (12 sts)
      • Round 7: hdc in each st around. (12 sts)
      • Round 8: hdc-dec every other st. (6 sts)
      • Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  • Inner ears (optional, make 2):
    • With pink yarn:
      • Follow the same steps as above, stopping after Round 6 for a smaller insert.

Strap

  • Make an I-cord strap:
    • With cream yarn and 4mm hook:
      • Row 1: ch 3, turn, sc in each st. (3 sts)
      • Pull up a loop in each st, slide the loops to the other side of the hook, and repeat to create a cord.
      • Continue until the strap is the desired length (approximately 100 cm for a crossbody strap).

Assembly

  • Attach the ears:
    • Use the long tails from the ears and a tapestry needle to sew the ears to the top of the bag, spacing them evenly.
    • If using inner ears, sew the pink pieces to the cream ears first before attaching them to the bag.
  • Sew the strap:
    • Attach one end of the I-cord to one side of the bag, near the top edge.
    • Repeat on the opposite side for the other end of the strap.
  • Add the face details:
    • Place 8mm safety eyes or sew buttons for eyes, positioning them evenly on the front of the bag.
    • Use black yarn to embroider a small triangle for the nose and a simple “Y” for the mouth.
    • Use pink blush for the cheeks, applying lightly below the eyes.

Finishing

  • Weave in all ends: Use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
  • Shape the bag: Lightly block the bag if needed to ensure the shape is neat.
