Stitching Instructions for Making Transitions Poncho Pattern:

Step 1: Foundation Chain

  • Ch 60-70 (adjust for desired width). This will be the base for the poncho.
  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
    • This creates a solid foundation for the poncho’s edge.

Step 2: Begin the Body of the Poncho

  • Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in each st across. Turn.
    • Starting the body of the poncho with a row of dc gives it a nice, solid base.
  • Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st across the row. Turn.
    • The ch 1 spaces create a textured pattern and transitions for a flowing look.
    • This row introduces the space between dc stitches.
  • Row 4: Ch 2, dc in each dc and in each ch-1 sp across the row. Turn.
    • This row works into both the dc stitches and the spaces made in the previous row, making the pattern more open and airy.
  • Repeat Rows 3 and 4: Continue repeating Row 3 (with the chain spaces) and Row 4 (working into the dc and ch-1 sp) for the length of the body.
    • Each set of rows builds the open, textured fabric of the poncho.
    • Continue until your poncho measures around 24-30 inches in length (or desired length).

Step 3: Creating the Neck Opening

  • Fold the Poncho: Once the body reaches your desired length, fold the piece in half lengthwise to find the center.
    • Mark the center with a stitch marker to establish the middle of the neck opening.
  • Neck Opening: Decide how wide you want the neck opening (8-10 inches in diameter). You can adjust the width based on comfort.
    • Row 1 (Neck Opening): Starting from the center, sc in each st across to form one side of the neck opening, stopping where you want the opening to begin.
    • Now work the other side of the neck opening: Repeat the same for the second half of the neck opening, leaving a gap for the head.
    • Continue the pattern after the neck opening is established:
      • Row 2 (after neck opening): Work the pattern in the round (or work each side of the neck opening as individual pieces) until it is long enough to form the rest of the poncho.

Step 4: Edging and Finishing

  • Edge the Poncho: After completing the body of the poncho, it’s time to add an edging for a finished look.
    • Round 1 (Edging): Ch 1, sc evenly around the entire poncho, including around the neck opening. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
    • You may need to place more or fewer stitches to ensure an even border around the neck and the bottom edges.
  • Round 2 (Edging): Ch 2, dc in each sc from the previous round. Place 2 dc in each corner space to help with shaping the poncho. Join with a sl st to the first dc.
    • This row adds a smooth and polished look to the edges and corners of the poncho.

Step 5: Final Touches

  • Fasten Off: Once you are satisfied with the edging, fasten off the yarn and use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
  • Blocking (Optional): To help set the shape and relax any tight stitches, block your poncho. Lay it flat, gently stretch it to the desired dimensions, and allow it to dry.
