Stitching Instructions for Saratoga Slippers Pattern:

Sole:

Foundation Chain (CH):

  • Begin by creating a foundation CH according to your size:
    • Small: CH 20
    • Medium: CH 24
    • Large: CH 28
    • Extra Large: CH 32

This chain forms the base length of the sole.

Row 1 (Base Round):

  • SC into the second CH from the hook and into each CH across.
  • When you reach the last CH, work 3 SC into it to turn the corner and create a rounded edge.
  • Continue working along the opposite side of the foundation CH, placing SC into each CH.
  • In the final CH (where the first stitch was made), work 3 SC to mirror the other side.
  • Join with a SL ST to the first SC to form an oval-shaped sole.

Rows 2-4 (Building the Sole):

  • Work in continuous rounds without joining, increasing at the rounded ends to shape the sole:
    • Row 2: SC into each stitch around, working INC in the 3 stitches at each rounded edge.
    • Row 3-4: Continue SC around, placing INC evenly across the rounded sections to maintain the oval shape.
  • Adjust the size by adding or reducing rows to fit your measurements.

Upper Section

Start the Upper:

  • Attach yarn at one side of the sole. SC evenly around the edge of the sole, ensuring the stitch count is even.
  • For texture, alternate FPSC and BPSC stitches in the first round.
    • FPSC: Insert the hook around the post of the stitch from front to back, yarn over, and complete an SC.
    • BPSC: Insert the hook around the post of the stitch from back to front, yarn over, and complete an SC.
  • This creates a ribbed edge for a snug and decorative finish.

Shaping the Top:

  • Work SC stitches around, leaving the toe section for decreases:
    • Row 1: SC evenly across, but begin DEC every 4 stitches at the toe section.
    • Row 2: Repeat, but reduce the interval—DEC every 3 stitches at the toe section.
    • Row 3: Continue SC and DEC every 2 stitches until the toe starts to close.
  • Adjust as needed for a comfortable fit.

Heel Section:

  • At the back of the slipper, work SC rows to create height:
    • Begin SC across the heel, turning at the end of each row.
    • Use DEC stitches at the edges if necessary to taper the fit around the heel.
    • Continue until the heel reaches your desired height.

Finishing

  • Final Touches:
    • Work a row of SL ST around the opening to give it a clean, polished edge.
    • If desired, use a contrasting yarn for the SL ST round to add a decorative touch.
    • You can also crochet a small trim (like scallops) or add loops for buttons or embellishments.
  • Assembly:
    • Use a yarn needle to weave in all loose ends securely.
    • If the sole feels too thin, consider sewing on a fabric lining or a non-slip rubber pad for extra durability.

Special Tips

  • Custom Fit: Try the slipper on frequently to ensure it fits comfortably. Add extra SC rows for more length or width as needed.
  • Personal Touch: Add appliqués, buttons, or pom-poms to the finished slippers for a unique flair.
