Swirly Cat patterns

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Suggested Yarn: Durable Double Four like- Drops Paris or Chalista.
  • Hook Size: 4mm (adjust hook size according to your yarn choice for correct gauge).
  • Needle: Yarn needle for weaving in ends.
  • Finished Pattern Measurements: Approximately 12cm (if using Durable Double Four yarn and 4mm hook size).

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • beg = beginning
  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • fsc = foundation single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • slst = slip stitch
  • st = stitch
  • sp = space

Special Stitches:

  • sc (Foundation Single Crochet): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through a loop, yarn over, pull through 1 loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops.
  • Note: When working into a previous fsc, insert the hook through both the front and back loops.

Stitching Instructions for Swirly Cat Pattern Pattern:

Round 1:

  • Color 1: Start with a magic ring, ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), then work 6 sc into the magic ring.
  • (6 sc total)

Round 2:

  • Work (1 sc, 1 hdc) in the first sc from round 1.
  • 2 dc in the next 2 stitches.
  • Leave a long loop, remove the hook, and join Color 2 with a slst in the same stitch.
  • Work (1 sc, 1 hdc) in the next stitch, then 2 dc in the next 2 stitches.
  • Leave a long loop.

Round 3:

  • Pick up the loop from Color 1 and work 2 dc in the next 6 stitches.
  • Leave a long loop and pick up the loop from Color 2.
  • Work 2 dc in the next 6 stitches.
  • Leave a long loop.

Round 4:

  • Pick up the loop from Color 1 and work [1 dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st] 6 times.
  • Leave a long loop, then pick up the loop from Color 2.
  • Work [1 dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st] 5 times.
  • Work 1 dc in the next st, then (1 hdc, 1 sc) in the next stitch.
  • Leave a long loop.

Round 5:

  • Pick up the loop from Color 1 and work 1 dc in the next 3 stitches, then dc2tog in the next 2 stitches.
  • Turn your work, skip the next 2 stitches.
  • Work 7 dc in the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches, then slst in the next stitch.
  • Turn your work and work 1 sc in the next stitch.
  • Work (1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 dc with 2 ch and slst in top, 1 dc, 1 hdc) in the next stitch.
  • Skip the next stitch, then slst in the next stitch, skip the next stitch.
  • Work (1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 dc with 2 ch and slst in top, 1 dc, 1 hdc) in the next stitch.
  • Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then slst in the next stitch.
  • Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in the ends.

Round 6:

  • Pick up the loop from Color 2 and work 1 sc in the next 5 stitches.
  • Work 1 fsc in the same stitch as the last sc.
  • Work 1 fsc in the foundation of the previous stitch 9 times.
  • For the next fsc, insert the hook through both the foundation of the previous stitch and a stitch on the cat’s body, and work 1 fsc in the foundation of the previous stitch 3 more times.
  • Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in the ends.

Final Touches:

Once you’ve completed all rounds, your Swirly Cat should have a lovely spiral pattern with color changes that create a playful, textured look. 

Use a yarn needle to securely weave in any loose ends and shape the body of the cat as needed.
