Instructions for Making the Chevron Tapestry Clutch Bag Pattern:
Base Rounds (MC)
Begin by creating the foundation tube that forms the body of the clutch. The first 16 rounds are worked exclusively in the main color (MC), establishing height before the chevron pattern begins.
- With MC, leave a long tail for later seaming.
- Ch 90, then sl st to the first ch to form a ring, ensuring the chain is not twisted.
- Throughout Rounds 1-16, carry a second strand of MC under your stitches to maintain structure.
- Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st). Sc in the joining chain and in each ch around. Do not join.
- Round 2: Work sc blo in the first st, place a stitch marker in this st, then sc blo in each st around. Do not join.
- Rounds 3-16: Repeat Round 2, keeping stitches tight so the carried strand remains hidden.
- These foundational rounds form a dense and sturdy fabric ideal for bag construction.
Colorwork Rounds (Rounds 17-41)
The chevron design is created using a repeating 10-stitch pattern (worked 9 times around for 90 stitches). While working these rounds, switch colors smoothly and continue carrying unused yarn neatly under your sc blo stitches.
- Round 17: With CC1, sc blo 5; with CC2, sc blo 5. Repeat around without joining.
- Round 18: (CC2) sc blo 1, (CC1) sc blo 5, (CC2) sc blo 5; repeat until 9 sts remain. End with (CC1) sc blo 5, (CC2) sc blo 4. Do not join.
- Round 19: (CC2) sc blo 2, (CC1) sc blo 5, (CC2) sc blo 5; repeat until 8 sts remain. End with (CC1) sc blo 5, (CC2) sc blo 3.
- Round 20: (CC2) sc blo 3, (CC1) sc blo 5, (CC2) sc blo 5; repeat until 7 sts remain. End with (CC1) sc blo 5, (CC2) sc blo 2.
- Round 21: (CC2) sc blo 4, (CC1) sc blo 5, (CC2) sc blo 5; repeat until 6 sts remain. End with (CC1) sc blo 5, (CC2) sc blo 1.
- Round 22: Repeat Round 20.
- Round 23: Repeat Round 19.
- Round 24: Repeat Round 18.
- Rounds 25-40: Repeat Rounds 17-24 two more times to complete the chevron section.
- Round 41: Repeat Round 17 once more to finish the colorwork sequence.
Upper Edge Rounds (MC)
Return to the main color to stabilize the upper edge.
- Rounds 42-44: Repeat Round 2 (sc blo around without joining).
- Round 45: Sl st through both loops in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first st, cut yarn, and fasten off.
Finishing
Blocking and Seaming
To ensure clean edges and smooth fabric:
- Pin the crocheted tube to a blocking mat.
- Wet-block or steam-block to even stitches and square the shape.
- After blocking, turn the clutch inside out and use the long starting tail to whipstitch the bottom closed. Turn the clutch right-side out again and weave in all ends.
Attaching the Liner and Zipper
Prepare Fabric: Cut a piece of fabric approx. 9″ × 18.5″. Press well.
- Sew Zipper to Fabric:
- Place fabric RS up; lay zipper (RS up) along the top edge.
- Pin and sew.
- Fold zipper upward so WS faces out. Fold fabric’s lower edge up to meet the zipper’s top edge; pin and sew.
- When opened, the RS of the fabric should face you neatly.
- Sew Side Seams: Pin both sides of the liner and sew closed, ensuring its final width fits inside your clutch.
- Insert Liner: Slide the finished liner into the bag, align evenly, pin in place, and hand-sew the zipper edge to the crochet fabric.
Optional Wrist Strap
Crochet an i-cord approx. 12″ long. Sew the ends to form a loop and attach it to a clasp. Fold the clutch so the chevron bands align and secure a D-ring or split ring at the fold edge. Clip on the strap.
