Stitching Instructions for Making Tulip Square Poncho Pattern:

Foundation:

  • Start with the first square (make 2 squares for each size)
    • Ch 5 and join with a sl st to form a ring.
  • Round 1:
    • Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), then make 2 dc into the ring.
    • Ch 2 (this is your corner space), and make 3 dc into the ring again.
    • Repeat this until you have 4 corners (total of 12 dc).
    • Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 to complete round 1.
  • Round 2:
    • Ch 3, then work 2 dc in the same space.
    • In each ch 2 space from the previous round, work 3 dc, ch 2, and 3 more dc (for the corners).
    • For the sides, work 3 dc in each space between the corners.
    • Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 3 to complete round 2.
  • Round 3:
    • Ch 3, then work 2 dc in the same space.
    • Continue to work 3 dc in each space between the corners.
    • For the corners, work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
    • Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 3.
  • Round 4 and onward (Repeat until desired size):
    • Repeat the same steps as Round 3, increasing the side stitches in between the corners by 3 dc in each space between the corners.
    • Join with a sl st at the end of each round.
  • Finish off: After you reach the desired size (based on your measurement chart), fasten off and weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.

Making the Fringe:

  • Create Fringe for Each Corner:
    • Cut 4″ strands of yarn (around 10 pieces per corner).
    • Use a phone/book to hold the yarn and create the tassels by folding each strand in half.
    • Use a crochet hook to pull the folded yarn through each corner space, then pull the ends of the strands through to form a tassel.
    • Repeat for each corner and along the sides as desired.

Assembly:

  • Joining the Two Squares:
    • Once the two squares are completed, place them side by side with the right sides facing each other.
    • Use a whip stitch or slip stitch to join the edges together along the sides of the squares, leaving an opening for the neck area. You may wish to leave a couple of inches on the top for the neckline.
  • Add Fringe: Add fringe to the bottom edges and corners of the poncho to complete the look.
