Stitching Instructions for Making the Summer Cardigan Crochet Pattern:

Back Panel:

  • Ch 76 (84, 92, 100): Start by chaining the indicated number of stitches for your size.
  • Row 1:
    • Dc in the 4th ch from hook (this is your 1st dc cluster made).
    • Sk next st, dc cl in next st; repeat this pattern across the row.
    • You should have 74 (82, 90, 98) sts by the end of the row.
  • Row 2:
    • Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout the pattern), turn.
    • Dc in the last dc cl sp of the previous row (this makes your 1st dc cluster of the row).
    • Dc cl in next dc cl sp; repeat this pattern across the row.
    • End with 74 (82, 90, 98) sts.
  • Rows 3-4: Repeat Row 2.
  • Row 5:
    • Ch 3, turn.
    • Dc in the last dc cl sp of the previous row.
    • Ch 2, sk next dc cl, dc cl in next dc cl sp; repeat this pattern across the row.
    • You should have 74 (82, 90, 98) sts at the end.
  • Row 6:
    • Ch 3, turn.
    • Dc in the first dc cl sp (this forms a dc cluster).
    • 2dc in ch-2 sp, dc cl in next dc cl sp; repeat across the row.
  • Rows 7-10:
    • Repeat Rows 5 & 6 two more times (total of 4 rows).
    • You should see alternating rows of dc cl and spaces between them.
  • Rows 11-18: Repeat Row 2.
  • Rows 19-36:
    • Repeat Rows 5 & 6 as stated for your size.
    • Note: If you’re crocheting size S, you’ll continue to the front panel after this. For larger sizes, repeat Rows 5 & 6 the indicated number of extra times.

Front Panel:

  • Split Stitches:
    • To create the neck opening, you’ll split the stitches of the back panel evenly, working each front panel separately.
    • You’ll work over half the total number of stitches from the back panel. For example, if you are making the Small, divide 76 sts from the back panel, and work over 38 sts per front panel.
  • Rows 1-14 (16, 18, 20):
    • For each front panel, repeat Rows 5 & 6, working across only 38 (42, 46, 50) sts for your size.
    • Place a stitch marker if needed to keep track of the stitch count.
  • Continue to Length: After completing Row 14 (or your size’s last front panel row), continue to repeat Row 2 until your front panel reaches the same length as the back panel.
  • Tie off: Once the panel is the same length, tie off and weave in your ends.
  • Second Front Panel:
    • For the second front panel, start in the same stitch as the last stitch of the first front panel (important for proper stitch count).
    • Repeat the same steps as the first panel to create the second one.

Assemble & Seam:

  • Fold Front Panels Over Back Panel: Fold both front panels over the back panel, aligning them as shown in the pattern schematic.
  • Sew Sides:
    • Using a whip stitch, sew up the sides, leaving a generous 9” space for the arm openings.
    • If you made separate back and front panels, sew the shoulders and side seams together.
  • Collar:
    • Pick Up Yarn: Start at the lower bottom corner of one of the front panels and pick up your yarn.
    • Work 2 Rows of Hdc:
      • Work 2 rows of half double crochet (hdc) through the front loop only around the neck, from one front panel corner to the other.
      • This creates a clean and simple collar for the cardigan.

Lower Edging:

  • Pick Up Yarn at Lower Edge: Begin at the lower edge of the cardigan, picking up yarn at one side.
  • Work 3 Rows of Hdc:
    • Work 3 rows of half double crochet (hdc) through the front loop only along the entire lower edge of the cardigan.
  • Tie Off: Once you finish the edging, tie off your yarn and weave in all the ends.

Enjoy wearing your beautiful Summer Fun Cardi!
