Stitching Instructions for Making the Pretty Drop Stitch Cardigan Beginner Crochet Sweater Pattern:
Main Rectangle
- Ch 130
Half Double Crochet Section:- Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each st across (128 sts)
- Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as st), hdc in each st across (128 sts)
- Rows 3 – 7: Repeat Row 2
- Drop Stitch Section:
- Row 8:
- Ch 1, make the loop long with hook and place on knitting needle (first drop st complete)
- Sk 1st hdc, drop st in next hdc and in each hdc across the row
- Do not work into the beginning ch 2 (it doesn’t count as a st)
- Remove knitting needle from loops (128 drop sts)
- Row 9:
- Insert hook into first loop, yo and pull up a loop, ch 1, hdc in same loop
- Hdc in each loop across row, turn (128 sts)
- Row 10:
- Ch 2, hdc in each st across, do not turn (128 sts)
- Row 11: Repeat Row 8
- Row 12: Repeat Row 9
Repeat Pattern Sections:
- Alternate between the Half Double Crochet Section and Drop Stitch Section until you’ve completed 4 Drop Stitch Sections.
Final Upper Section:
- Row 1: Ch 2, hdc in each st across (128 sts)
- Rows 2 – 12: Repeat Row 1
- (The piece should measure approximately 32” long)
- Adjust length as needed by adding or removing rows.
Assembly:
- Fold the rectangle lengthwise.
- Seam from the inner edge outward, leaving approximately 3.75” openings on each side for the armholes.
- Adjust opening size for a comfortable fit around the arm/wrist.
Ribbed Collar:
- Ch 13
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across (12 sts)
- Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc blo in each st across (12 sts)
- Repeat Row 2 until the piece is long enough to seam between the stitch markers on the cardigan.
- Whip stitch seam the collar to the inside of the cardigan.
Ribbed Sleeve Cuffs:
- Ch 9
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across (8 sts)
- Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc blo in each st across (8 sts)
- Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 7 ¼ inches long (or to fit comfortably around the wrist).
- Tie off and whip stitch ends together.
- Whip stitch seam each cuff to the wrist openings on the cardigan.
Finishing Touches:
- Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle.
- Block the cardigan as needed to shape and smooth stitches.
